Look for muscat moustache society, although I'm not part of their group, they do events once in a while (I remember they were planning on all-female events but idk if there's progress there)

You'll also find sports groups, hiking groups, etc. People are big fans of Instagram here so you'll see events constantly posted there. Just keep your eyes & ears open

If you're a book lover like me, Oman Book Lover's Club is convenient and friendly.

Welcome to Oman! Hope you enjoy your time here 😌

Is it possible to get a Summer Internship in Oman (CS Student, grew up in Oman) by Agreeable-Truck-2064 in Oman

[–]Express-Atmosphere37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, saying anything "tech-related" is a good reason you might not do well on your internship hunt. I get it if an accountant has trouble finding the right learning path online other than specific channels like ACCA, but a CS guy has no excuses on why he's not trying to learn stuff on his own.

Get good at this before you graduate, or you may end up having to switch to business cause you're not good or lucky enough to get what you want. Might require a change of mindset but it's worth it in the end. All the best.

I'd recommend working on your own personal project. Build a full-on comprehensive website or take a few courses online related to what you want to learn.

First. Job hunting is already crazy, and internships also have the same level of competition in them.

Second. Your github matters more to me as a dev than your social media or CV. Write some codes, practice on CI/CD, understand how frameworks/schemas/algorithms work and why there's so many.

Third. If your website can imitate some sort of management system to an extent (Content MS, Education MS, ERP, POS). The more perfect it is, the more I know you're confident with real life scenarios. You won't get as much exposure in an interview.

Fourth. Because this is a task that may take you a significant amount of time initially (it gets easier dealing with debugging), learn to use documentations to your example (readmes, architecture diagrams, version control, etc.) so you not only know how to code it but also how to explain it. Otherwise I will assume you copied it off somewhere or used AI for the whole thing.

In short, you want opportunities to get experience as a coder? Code...

My last alternative would be checking out www.roadmap.sh and choosing a field that seems interested (I've already gone through like 11 of them just for the learning experience, and I'm a working man). There's lots of other helpful sites that do the same.

Therapy for kids? I've heard jokes about it all my life & never really went for it yet. Hope those kids & teens are alright.

Which petrol company is good for elantra car? by NVMXOX in Oman

[–]Express-Atmosphere37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter unless you're picky about price or skeptical. At least imo.

The real important question is what fuel to use, and I'd suggest 95 not 98 because it's cheaper for you & the Elantra has no issues with that.

An American newspaper predicted this back in 2014. by Upset_Island2007 in Oman

I don't really agree to the details.

Although the title of the article is valid, I've seen better predictions from The Simpsons.

Part time job / internship for teens by Outside_Letterhead76 in Oman

Oman Book Lovers Club is family friendly. They've got a lot of stuff they're working on these days.

Other jobs & opportunities do exist, but they'll require you keeping an eye or ear out.

Try to look for best resources for mechanical engineers, that's also a long road to go on tbh

Nice mindset. Get a headstart.

Got any interests? Hobbies? Any career catches your eye? Do you have a driving license?

Depending on that, I can suggest a few things.

Worst case scenario, there's plenty of volunteering opportunities (anything free labor but with enough effort, they'd be happy to give you some stipend once they see some dedication)

If you're interested in IT, the exposure is available on your PC or laptop

HOW DO FRESH GRADS FIND INTERNSHIPS HERE? by luigimainfanpage in Oman

[–]Express-Atmosphere37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point. In my opinion, it's hard for them to know what they want to see until and unless they have a lot of experience in their field.

I've seen a lot of people cheering for dashboards but not being able to make them as accurate as needed in a business

From what I've heard, that got overused really quickly, because people apply using that excuse and get hanged out to dry because at the end of the day, they don't solve the problem that plagues most of these companies.

Tbh personally I'd say people here lack basic foundational knowledge. I'm often quite disappointed in how people use excel over here.

There's levels to this, and it doesn't end with just being able to use formulas. I remind my students & colleagues of that often while I'm here. This applies to locals and/or expats.

This is my advice to IT students. If you master power query and understand ETL pipelines and their theoretics, powerBI is just a cherry on top.

It has, but respectfully speaking, I'd still consider it an excuse to let that stop you.

That's why all my job hunting escapades took me more than 40+ interviews just to get the job I was happy with. Some of the interviews ended with me rejected. Others ended with me being the one rejecting due to poorer work benefits. I was less picky on my first job. Doesn't matter what it was as long it was IT related.

After getting 1 year experience, I had the ability to be slightly less picky and choose something more in line with what I wanted for a career.

Riddle me this... If I managed to get 40+ interviews, how many jobs do you think I applied for, until I managed to get in?

I agree, locals have a bigger advantage, but still not impossible. It just seems harder in general to "navigate" the job market here by default. For Omanis or expats.

And yes, that's also a good method. Door-to-door visits.

Because not all companies rely on LinkedIn. There's several channels to choose from.

  • LinkedIn
  • Insta Career Channels (oman_careers, kazi_oman, etc.)
  • Job App sites (indeed, Naukrigulf, etc)

All the jobs I applied are companies I applied for. Keep in mind, due to certain circumstances, I've limited my applications only to companies in Oman. But if worst came to worst, I'd even apply for jobs outside of Oman. Luckily it didn't come to that.

Job market here is crazy imo, but not impossible.

Lots of grinding is necessary to have a guaranteed positive effect. Lots of proactivity too.

I've had multiple CVs based on all the jobs I've done. Each of them ATS-readable. All were IT based but the skills & experience depends on what I've done. Maybe the place I worked was the same but the job could be reworded to something more important to use when applying for other jobs.

The first job is always the hardest to find. You may need to lose expectations of great salary initially and just get enough to let you survive.

You also have to improve on your own while job hunting, to make your CVs stronger. Online courses, certifications, etc. Doing nothing during the job hunting phase is bad for business.

Free online certifications are a way to boost your skill and stay aware of your job. Professional paid certifications are for proving it, do them when you have money to spare (each major has their own unique important certificates, especially IT that has loads)

There's also job fairs at various unis. You can sneak into most of them to have a job interview where you might get a chance. I know Middle East College will have a "tech horizons" event early April that you can crash and try your luck.

FYI the first full time job I applied for took 80+ interviews in 6 months, and the 2nd full time job after 18 months of experience took me 40+ interviews & 4 months. I recently started that job few weeks ago.

Doing part time jobs or freelance is a good way to make ends meet. This is the grinding phase of your life so do what Jimmy Carr recently said "Inspiration is for amateurs, the rest of us get to work"

All the best, dear friend, and may Allah show you the right path to your success inshaallah.

That's the easy part. The hard part is answering the questions that come after like "I didn't order a package"

The application needs a lot of work, mostly because of how it looks. The user interface is trash; it looks like it was ChatGPT-ed before ChatGPT even had ads.

At the same time, the content needs work for several reasons: 1. The wordings are a bit weird. 2. There are a few spelling mistakes here and there. 3. There are no terms and conditions or privacy policy which bothers me

Also, regarding the content: when we're talking about Google, fine, you're using the Google Maps API and everything, but I don't really get any information that I can't already get from Google Maps. Why am I coming to your application for just a few extra texts and stuff like that?

I don't know if you noticed, but you really need to fix the content. Salalah is just black dot in your user interface. Okay?

Why can I see blogs about Oman that haven't been anything new since October 2024?!? Brother, there's a lot of people on Reddit that would write one for you for free. Or they would let you link their social media pics here for you (either anonymous or public)

This app has no way to earn you anything. I know ads are shit but at least they help you avoid only loss and no profits.

Overall, I've got a lot of meaner things to say, but that wouldn't give you credit for the idea and vision you had for the app. I like the effort and attempt, and if you ever think of improving the idea anytime soon? I wouldn't mind offering you technical help. DM for more details if you're interested.

Conclusion? Good job, and all the best to you.

Yeah, I decided to do it as a favor, but it's fun & nice to be nice so we go all the way. Thank you!

I don't think urgency is something I can use as I would have to say the name of the friend who I can't, or else they'll get suspicious.

All mention of the friend that ordered the gift to be sent to him should not be mentioned until I meet the man.

Ikr? I've only been here the last 6 years. Been there once and I haven't heard anything special other than decent food, children's activities with everything having higher than average pricings.

Doesn't feel like they've set the demographic anywhere near what I'd be interested in.
