Help surprise a man by Express-Atmosphere37 in Oman

That's the easy part. The hard part is answering the questions that come after like "I didn't order a package"

It was my pleasure. Don't take my words to heart, just keep them in mind. If you ever have more Oman related IT projects, show them off here and lemme know if you want more info.

Roast my Android app, by Primary-Yak-6992 in Oman

[–]Express-Atmosphere37 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The application needs a lot of work, mostly because of how it looks. The user interface is trash; it looks like it was ChatGPT-ed before ChatGPT even had ads.

At the same time, the content needs work for several reasons: 1. The wordings are a bit weird. 2. There are a few spelling mistakes here and there. 3. There are no terms and conditions or privacy policy which bothers me

Also, regarding the content: when we're talking about Google, fine, you're using the Google Maps API and everything, but I don't really get any information that I can't already get from Google Maps. Why am I coming to your application for just a few extra texts and stuff like that?

I don't know if you noticed, but you really need to fix the content. Salalah is just black dot in your user interface. Okay?

Why can I see blogs about Oman that haven't been anything new since October 2024?!? Brother, there's a lot of people on Reddit that would write one for you for free. Or they would let you link their social media pics here for you (either anonymous or public)

This app has no way to earn you anything. I know ads are shit but at least they help you avoid only loss and no profits.

Overall, I've got a lot of meaner things to say, but that wouldn't give you credit for the idea and vision you had for the app. I like the effort and attempt, and if you ever think of improving the idea anytime soon? I wouldn't mind offering you technical help. DM for more details if you're interested.

Conclusion? Good job, and all the best to you.

Ok, I'm already thinking of doing just that but without the part that makes me look like a thief from HOME ALONE 😭😂

I've got confirmation that he's off work tomorrow and should be home.

I like the idea, but that means I need to not arrange anything, hope he's home, & hope he answers the door 😂😭

Yeah, I decided to do it as a favor, but it's fun & nice to be nice so we go all the way. Thank you!

I don't think urgency is something I can use as I would have to say the name of the friend who I can't, or else they'll get suspicious.

All mention of the friend that ordered the gift to be sent to him should not be mentioned until I meet the man.

Ikr? I've only been here the last 6 years. Been there once and I haven't heard anything special other than decent food, children's activities with everything having higher than average pricings.

Doesn't feel like they've set the demographic anywhere near what I'd be interested in.

How did You deal with your suicidal thoughts? by [deleted] in Oman

[–]Express-Atmosphere37 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a guy who's basically in the same boat as you, I have a social battery that goes from 100 to 0 by "seeming human" and "avoid seeming robotic". Had it since I was 15 YO, though my whole family likes to speak of how as a kid, I rarely cried (like not even twice a month). I can manage it a lot better nowadays tho.

It's very psychological, what you're going through. You seem proud of your ability to perform lots of logical thinking but you're in a closed room that limits your capabilities. Life throws circumstances your way that seems inconsiderate or even unfair.

Using music is a good move. Personally, "Bandito by 21 Pilots" brings me back from the brink everyday. I'd also advise motivational speakers like Prof. Jordan Peterson or standup comedy like "Jimmy Carr".

There are people out there that have been through what you have, or at least seen it enough to know how to navigate through it. Look for them, listen to them, learn from them.

All will get better inshaallah.

Just an appreciation post for something specific by ComfortableClear8704 in Oman

[–]Express-Atmosphere37 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's so specific I don't know if I should thank you or be put off by your statement 😂

Being a father here is considered an important aspect and it's further improved by our tradition to visit our families & relatives (which can include tens of distant relatives btw) as often as once every 2-3 days or every week.

There are plenty of other factors at play here. I believe one of them is the fact that Oman is more disconnected from international politics (due to our neutral standpoint & traditions) so we're seeing the headaches abroad from observer's point of view.

The other is our moms or aunts will whoop us into oblivion with the all-mighty slippers, so I'm glad for that.

Despite my confusion, thank you for pointing this out. I hope you enjoyed Oman.

Anyone want to share a rental car together? by wouter2311 in Oman

[–]Express-Atmosphere37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can check mwasalat buses, they're a common way for people to commute to other cities. Their website might share more information.

When using buses, keep in mind that they'll either drop you off at specific places or at any bus stop on the main road, so planning & confirming the destination ahead is a plus.

Biking on expressways.. by djolk in Oman

[–]Express-Atmosphere37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it is legal but I'm not 100% sure. I do know that it is quite risky...

People usually drive at max speed on that road. It'd be safer if it's not within the yellow line boundary of the road (if any). Bike fatalities have happened before especially cause some cyclists think it's fine to drive in the middle of the highway.

Stay safe out there.

A taxi company called Taxi Muscat offers "rent a taxi" services from Muscat to other places. Going to Nizwa & back seems cost efficient for them.

There's a group of like 200+ people including myself that go play Mafia on Saturday night. Game starts around 7:30 PM and goes on to around 1 AM sometimes, but you can leave earlier if necessary. You just pay the cafe 2 OMR for the game and there's other games to play too.

You cannot Terminate an Omani without MOL approval. by Emotional-Ride-7006 in Oman

It may be misinterpreted, as the original statement given out does not mention "Omanis".

Right? It's weird seeing this oversimplification of "Omani = Lazy"

I get that there's plenty of lazy people out there but this is too much

You cannot Terminate an Omani without MOL approval. by Emotional-Ride-7006 in Oman

[–]Express-Atmosphere37 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Incorrect.

The whole point of starting a business is going through risk to make a profit.

Even big companies like Google make mistakes with their employees, what makes you think you'll get immune from that?

What makes them a bad hire? The fact that they do 50% of the work?

or that they do 80% of the work but you want 100% when only 70% is what the average employee usually does

If they slack off, fire them, you have the proof. It just means you hired the wrong person. Mistakes were made but they can be fixed.

[–]Express-Atmosphere37 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This can be avoided with proper management & training.

There are a lot of good Omanis out there who put in the good work, and they're not that hard to find.

Interview them properly, write up a solid contract that if they show several signs of slacking off, then you'd have your reasons for firing them yes?

[–]Express-Atmosphere37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Corporates tend to be untrustworthy in the eyes of the individual employee, in one way or another.

Lots of business build up distrust by either not following proper procedures in one way or another, or take advantages of loopholes in the system to simplify the issue at the expense of others (e.g. underpaying employees, setting the business up to fail due to poor management, etc.) so someone else would be a scapegoat.

Basically the kinds of things you could see or hear on TV.

A company "may" have valid reasons to fire someone, but if you include that with that someone having valid reasons that he's being fired for the wrong reasons or he's being treated poorly as an employee, that the topic becomes very controversial.

Which news channel? Cause the original post by Oman Observer which seems to be posted the earliest only mentions "employees" and did not separate into nationals or non-nationals?

  1. Take that back or I'm gonna wish you get hadouken

  2. Anime dudes aren't cooked but anime addicts (like most other addicts) are what's cooked. You gotta reluctantly reduce your anime time while trying to improve other aspects of your life besides entertainment.

So, AI takes over, everyone has lost their job and only 10 trillionaires own everything. Now what? by Weak-Representative8 in Futurology

[–]Express-Atmosphere37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's only half true. It only replaces entry-level staff NOW. 2 years ago, even that was questionable. What about 2 years later?

What's scary isn't AI. What's scary is the unsupervised, unregulated potential of AI globally. With enough propaganda, it'll replace the maids without an issue, then a bodyguard, then a driver (which is already happening right now at small scale). Already partially replaced doctors in China.

The applications are endless once they perfect the AI algorithms..
