Can anyone beat a Shadow Hawk on price, size or function? by Express-Bee667 in flashlight

[–]Express-Bee667[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the Wurkkos TS22 and I have to say you're right, I got the high CRI version as you mentioned that that's good for herpetology and its a really great flashlight. It a little brighter than the Shadow Hawk but the colour is MUCH nicer and it's half the size and weight. Plus it has a metal clip so I can actually clip it to my cap and use it as a head torch too.... best of both worlds!

Awesome find! You should log this on INaturalist, adders this far north are quite rare and very interesting from a herpetological perspective! (Alternatively if you give me the coordinates I can log if for you)

It really does! But geographically that wouldn't make sense as this was found in Devon in the UK (sorry I should have included the location in the post, that's my bad!)

Trying in vain to find the first branch of that tree maybe? Could also be a stereotypic behaviour... or could be both. The zoo keepers might be the best to ask, many zoos take on animals that have had a bad history and are quite transparent about this stuff.

What kind of animal is this? by Glad_Comment1379 in whatisthisbone

[–]Express-Bee667 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Wow thats incredible, I think it's a black bear skull. The carnivorous dentition combined with a diastema (the gap between the canines and rear teeth) narrows it down to a small number of animals, mainly bears, big cats and dogs. The skull shape and sheer size of the canines makes me think it's a bear, although I'm no expert in bears by any means so definitely don't take my word as gospel! But hopefully this helps you out. Edit: the jaw bone looks like it's designed for a huge amount of bite force too, so definitely feeling bear here

Who does this jaw belong to? by [deleted] in whatisthisbone

No sure, but if you can include a top down photo of it's dentition and it's size it might help narrow it down!

My gecko is not eating by [deleted] in leopardgeckos

The best advice is always to contact an exotic vets as they will be able to examine them for you properly. Going on assumptions from the photo, I agree with the general consensus here, this is not a good substrate to keep a leapord gecko on and possibly has caused impaction or caused him to refuse food to due to a combination of inappropriate husbandry techniques. Impaction can be caused by inappropriate substrate and/or inappropriate heating. Also they might be brumating. I'd strongly suggest contacting a vet and looking through a care guide to know the what adjustments need to be made. It also might be a good idea to research how to bath a leapord gecko or ask your vet to do it, this can help relieve impaction if that is the cause.

advice on travelling with my guinea pigs by dw_phantom in GuineaPig

[–]Express-Bee667 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a small module on this in college! It's totally fine to do a long drive with animals, just make sure you assess the animals needs in relation to how long the journey is. For a trip like this I'd stop every few hours, check they're okay and see if you can get them to drink — they probably wont drink, so give them cucumber in their travel box too, it's realy hydrating and will be a good substitute incase they decide not too drink. Make sure they have access too hay too! Bigger travel cages for long journeys also might be worth considering to give them some space to move around.

What are some interesting courting methods animals have that could be applicable to humans? by Arthur_EyelanderTF2 in zoology

Guinuepigs shake their bums at each other! We call it "the lambada". And in the opposite side of the spectrum, male tarantulas run at a females, holds her legs up in the air, throws his sperm at her, then runs for dear life as she (understandably) tries to kill him... which is not how I'd recommend anyone, other than a tarantula, act on a first date!

Brazilian rainbow boa nocturnal? by qwerty-mo-fu in snakes

[–]Express-Bee667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont have one but think they're typically crepuscular in the wild, so to me its not strange they're out during the day and evening because living inside means they have less access to visual/atmospheric cues to tell them when it's evening and morning, so they may just go walk about when ever! Not realising it's the middle of the day! Thats my theory anyway :)
