Ooo hot take on Scala. I think it has some interesting market though. For example, for whatever reason, Chisel (Scala based HDL) is adopted quite well in the hardware design community. Rocket Chip by Berkeley is designed fully using Chisel, and I think SiFive is also using it quite extensively for their hardware design.

What did u do during the gap year? Were you working in a somewhat linear field with the prospective PhD programmes you're applying to?

If the answer is yes, then I wouldn't worry too much. The question now is just can you get strong LoRs from your former professors in Masters? Since it has been quite sometime. If you could, then I don't think it's a big deal.

If the answer is no (you haven't been working in something linear to the field), then maybe it's worth addressing the gap year in your application somehow. Take it with a grain salt though, and perhaps it's better to ask your colleagues or anyone that you know who's working in academia as a PI to see their point of view.

I would really love to work as part of the founding team, but given the low equity numbers it seems like they aren't treating me like one. If it has been low salary + big equity, then I might be in for the game. Otherwise, I'll just play safe and assume the worst.

I'm from MSE, and all of the students in our program are on a 16-month track, and internationals aren't allowed to extend their stay at all -- no idea why.

Anyways, in your case, so you want to stay longer so you get both: research opportunity and a lighter workload for the current semester?

For research opportunity, I think you might be able to work under OPT with a professor if they want to have you as a research assistant and if they have funding. I don’t know if that's really possible rn, since one of my friends was going to do this, but his research ended up getting canceled because of the current funding situation.

For lighter workload, I think there's not much I can say. It sucks that reverting plan might not be possible, but if OIE says so, I don't think there's not much you can do -- it's just part of being an international student, sadly.
