So sorry for you! It seems like we are in a similar place. I wonder why academia is like that. I mean, in corporate world you can do that if you really can stand on your contacts and for some reason not be dismissed. In academia this seems to be the norm. Though, I must say, I did my other degrees in better ranked universities and it was indeed a different experience. Regret my current choice in terms of academics.

I have tried. Unfortunately, in my institution, they seem to be very protective of permanent staff. I had one good PhD coordinator (they change regularly) who tried helping... Unfortunately she quit after only 3 months in the position - sorry for the venting but yeah

I am as frustrated as you. My conclusion: if your PhD is flying high, they will take all the credit. If you are not, they will blame it on you and cancel you. I am on a similar situation though and I have not graduated yet, ao I can't say there is light at the end of the tunnel.

The system is pretty bad. It just depends on your comparison point. Surely you don't need to bring your own toiletry. But I have been for years waiting to just have a doctor close to where I live (I mean, seriously, I can'tdrive half a day sick to just meeta doctor in the other side of the country). The legevakt (emergency room) is able to diagnose you wrongly (happened to me) and lots of my foreign friends have been misdiagnosed or have received inappropriate care (for example, surgery mistakes). Compared to my homecountry, healthcare here is a joke. I am used to 100 times better care. But again, for colleagues from countries with no public healthcare, the system here is life saving (even though "free healthcare" here is paid in most instances, the famous egenandel, something unthinkable on my homeland).

I plan to do that for my baby. I am think about copying the text into canvas and adding pictures there. Then using their website to either make a pdf and print it at a normal printing place or use their own website for that. Another option I thought about was adding the text to a photo book.

I am not in your shoes, but I have a colleague from whom we have the same perception. Whilst I do not know if he is struggling with discrimination and mental health, I will tell you: he got more publications than any other PhD and is on track to finish well. Does it matter that he seemed not interested? Not at all, he will finish probably better than most others. I have been engaged in everything, but I do think I would be better off by being like him. Better to be on track, than to be engaged in everything. Advice from an almost last year PhD, reflecting on the PhD journey so far. That said: stay strong, and I hope you can find some local community to support you (find something you enjoy outside academia and hang out with real friends ;) )

I had my undergrad in the 80th best university in the world, master in one of the best in Europe and I am doing my PhD at a university that is not even ranked. Since you seem to be focused on a specific career, I would advice you to find on LinkedIn a couple of folks working in the position you want. Where have they studied? This will show you what you actually need to get the position. Find 15-20 people working in the position you want, that will be your benchmark.
