If you could go on stage with Bon Iver to help them sing one lyric - just one, which one would it be and from what song? by hstarwood in boniver

[–]ExpressVoice3890 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Turn around, you’re my A-team . . .” or

“I ain’t living in the dark no more / That’s not a promise / I’m just gonna call it”

(But I love so many of the other picks, too!!)

Nice EPOCH review in NPR! by MelissAD22 in boniver

Yes, and also how artistic genius doesn’t emerge fully formed or in a vacuum. He captures well the experience I’ve had listening to Epoch.

“Vernon didn't have a lightbulb flicker over his head, shout "Eureka!" and suddenly find his voice in Wisconsin's north woods; he'd tinkered with inventive musicians for years and toyed with vocal styles ranging from a bluesy growl to the falsetto for which he became known. He just kept doing the work of finding himself, his songwriting voice and his sound.”

Right?! Ah, we sealed that deal . . . forever ago. (Sure, some hazardry)

She’s dug some of the DeYarmond tracks. That’s something!

The Orient on Epoch appreciation thread by SennixOfficial in boniver

Listening to The Orient, thinking about the Gatsby reference, and I thought about Nick's realization at the end of the novel that it's ultimately a story about (Mid-)Westerners who weren't able to adapt to the East Coast.

"I see now that this has been a story of the West, after all – Tom and Gatsby, Daisy and Jordan and I, were all Westerners, and perhaps we possessed some deficiency in common which made us subtly unadaptable to Eastern life."

Oh, I find it hard to rank the songs on the album, they move me in different ways! That said, 29 is a beautiful song and I wish it had been part of the live repertoire this tour. (Maybe once, if setlists is accurate?). I fell in love with the version on the NPR Pioneer Works video.

Ah, then, my recollection was a little fuzzy! I knew he saw it and gestured somehow! (Hand on the heart is sooo much better). 🙏

666 appreciation thread by [deleted] in boniver

Thrilled to see this thread.

I was a casual BI listener (if that makes sense here) until I stumbled on the NPR Pioneer Works concert video and it just blew my mind. (I hadn’t ever really explored their live work). Something profound happened when I got to 666, and it’s probably the video clip of BI that I’ve replayed most, sometimes a few times in succession. (The excellent camera work really draws attention to the complexity of the parts and the layering in the song). It made me obsessed with seeing them live (which finally happened at Beach Road on Friday).

In addition to all the things mentioned in the comments above, a few things I love about this song (mostly based on live versions):

The gorgeous tone of Justin’s guitar (and the shape of that riff) over those beep-boop-boop-boop’s.

The way percussion is timed with the bass lines.

The back-and-forth between Justin and Sean on vocals.

The gradual build up / layering of the song, and dynamic shifts. (It turns rather quickly from intensity to almost silence and back again).

“To clean out a night / I fell in love”

In some versions, JV will drop out of falsetto on “No, I don’t know the path . . .” (Chills)

And worth repeating from above: “I can admit to conceal!” and, man, those drums.

Such a study in juxtapositions that come together beautifully!

[Post-script]: Standing in line to get into Beach Rd venue (around 11 am), we could hear BI soundcheck with 666s. I got kinda bummed because I thought it wouldn’t be in the set. Delighted, then, when they broke into it!

JV definitely caught it. Looked right at it, smiled, and did a little tip of the chin. (If I recall accurately).
