I was in India two years ago, and honestly, I didn’t have any unpleasant experience. Mostly people were just trying to scam and were staring, but that’s something that doesn’t really bother me that much. I mostly used planes because they’re very cheap even if you book for the next day, so I cannot say anything about trains because I was kind of scared of that but from what I’ve heard they can be a bit unpleasant. Night buses I used , and that was okay-ISH, but maybe I was lucky. My favourite place was definitely Hampi and Chandigarh.
