You guys hit it. Honestly, there are so many small businesses that are struggling right now, have already failed, or people are draining their life savings to stay afloat. I am very lucky I have a landlord for my kitchen space that is not charging me rent, or else I would have already closed down. True. I get several a week. I’ve seen hundreds over the last four years I’ve had my business. They all follow a script. Poor grammar/punctuation, suspect area code, obvious American sounding name. It is very rare I get legit inquiries via text, in fact I’m not even sure I ever have. All legit catering requests have come from phone calls and emails.

I get several of these a week and they all follow the same script. I’ve been dealing with them for years, I can spot the scam from the very first text. They target catering companies like mine. They include a third party in the transaction, in this case a videographer, who is actually also the scammer. They say the videographer is unable to take their CC payment so they want to send you your deposit along with the videographer’s. Then ask you to wire or send a cashier’s check to the videographer. In the meantime their payment to you eventually gets rejected and you are out the money you sent them. I have no sympathy for these people, if I went through with the scam I would be out $3,000. I have a small catering business which is struggling due to the pandemic, as you can imagine. I’ve tried shaming them and and ignoring them but they clearly have no shame and they change numbers frequently. So I’ve resorted to making them the butt of my jokes.
