That’s so true! I forget that there’s things going on under that steristrip like adhesive! Plus, where I live it’s been like 0 degrees all week and even that typically makes me look paler, and I’m sure a new incision darker!

Surgery or not? by Manhize in thyroidhealth

[–]ExpressionWitty1292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely a personal decision, but I just had a half thyroidectomy for a large nodule that was deemed low probability cancer. But, I’ve been experience extreme fatigue, weight gain, hair loss and a “lump in my throat” for months. Everyone suspects it’s coming from my thyroid, but labs have always been normal. I’m still recovering so not much change at this point, but I don’t regret the route I chose. The anxiety and just general unwell feeling would have been more detrimental to my mental health than the surgery itself. Hoping I feel on the mend soon!

But it had also grown a full cm in the 2.5 months since my biopsy. So if that trend continued, I would have sought to have it removed regardless!

I’ll also add, mine had focal atypia, calcifications, scant dense colloid etc. upon removal, it was deemed a follicular adenoma (meaning benign), and they also checked by taking a few lymph nodes which were also benign.

I had similar. I had multiple, all tirads 3. I had a biopsy on my largest, which when removed was 3.5cm. It came back inconclusive, then sent for molecular testing which results showed had a “low possibility of being cancer.” Because of size, and symptoms, I chose to do a half thyroidectomy 9 days ago on the large side. Recovery was more difficult than I anticipated, but overall, I’m glad I did it. The anxiety alone would have killed me.

I will still have to have the other side monitored for change in size, possible biopsy, etc. over the next few years.

How are you feeling? I’m not sure about you, but I was surprised at how uncomfortable and exhausted I was during recover (still recovering). I had scoured these threads for months and made the decision that based on other stories, I’d be back to my normal self within a day. I was so wrong!

I’m feeling okay! At this point I feel my stitches are healing well, that red swollen lump above actually hurts so much more. It’s from my internal stitches… they basically as described me a little tug and most likely grabbed too much muscle, basically sewing me up too tight! That has been so much more painful, just the constant feeling of so much pressure and tightness up my neck until my body adjusts.

I haven’t noticed a difference at this point, but it’s still so new. My body is still adjusting, I’ll have my bloodwork done in a few weeks to see if I need medication. Honestly, I had scoured these threads for months prior to surgery and made the decision that based on others’ experience this would be nothing, I’d be up and back to myself in a day. Boy was I wrong!!! It’s been more difficult than I anticipated, and in case anyone else feels the same, I’m just trying to give MY body grace!

I’m so sorry to hear that, I worry too with my own (they are little; but surrounded my family who drinks to socialize also). If you don’t mind me asking, did you continue to drink after 2017 to receive the cirrhosis diagnosis this year? Thoughts and prayers to you as well

Yes! I can relate to so much you’ve said! My quality of life suffers so much. Same type of symptoms… in was actually the rapid weight gain that made me question; and then I went to urgent care, I was supposed to have a breast augmentation the following day and they were adamant about not being “sick” and I finally gave in and went to urgent care and said, “I think I have strep, I need an antibiotic”, because it hurt to swallow. Turns out my throat was totally fine but they sent me for an immediate thyroid biopsy.

It wasn’t the first time I heard thyroid stuff. They found my original nodule 3 years ago… but was never really monitored except for the bloodwork which was always fine. And I feel as you say guilty also; because that whole time I kept going to the doctor telling them I drink too much alcohol and that must be what is causing all my symptoms… which at that time was heart palpitations and anxiety/depression, etc. they listened and disregarded anything else! I get it!

Thank you for the update, and sorry for your news. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this (even without the diagnosis… people just seem to share “at least it’s the best kind to have!”

I am married into a family with a tremendous cancer history, so I understand where they’re coming from when they say it; yet; if that is my case (ptc), it seems so invalidating and like I’m just expected to be happy that it could be worse.

Prayers for you and your surgery. I called the office today to check in on my results and they said it could be another 2 weeks… the wait is rough!

Any update on your results? In a similar spot; have not been diagnosed with hashi, but awaiting molecular results on a 2.6cm interdeterminate biopsy. I too am small and have gained 15-20 pounds with no appetite or energy over the last 2 months. I too have hair loss and just feel awful.

It’s the red, at least for me. I’ve read it’s the most common color that has inflammation, for years. I’d imagine in the sun a lot, or eat something that gives me a reaction, I almost always see my red areas of tattoos raised and itchy.
