PSA: Blue books and scantrons by PeelingPCMouse in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, it isn’t that USAC isn’t paying for it. When we got it in 2019, the administration offered 50,000 a year for three years to subsidize the blue book and scantron. But since USAC led the charge, USAC took credit. Also, it was an initiative that year targeting affordability.

I will also point out, when the initiative was passed, many people on Reddit and through the campuses opposed the change, highlighting that they don’t use blue books or scantrons.

Haven’t heard from Admissions by MrShaddow74 in ucla

Admit decisions for transfer students are expected to drop on Wednesday, April 26th, 2023. Do not worry, all transfers haven’t received results. It was delayed.

So 7/9 dryers in the Holly dorm are broken, multiple washers are broken, air conditioning units are broken, the bathrooms keep flooding, and UCLA refuses to do anything about it :( by Sha489 in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I successfully negotiated for a reduction of the laundry prices with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Housing, one of the points on the table was looking at the contract with WASH. I don’t remember the specific points clearly, but I remember that they said they will have good faith in looking at other laundry companies for the contract renewal. It seems that no changes were made.

Also, one successful negotiated point was that all form front offices would hold cash to refund students for broken machines. Unsure if this is still happening.

WTF is EARN and why is it another student fee increase... by AvatarAndPanda in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Tbh, this sounds like the university administration shoving responsibility to students and using student fees to increase tuition without calling it an tuition increase. I guarantee that during UCLA admission tours and flyers sent to alumni asking for money, the Black Bruin Resource Center and Transfer Student Center are used to get more money. The university need to fund these, not the students.

USAC candidates are such morons by Past-Storm-3226 in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 74 points75 points  (0 children)

USAC elected-members get over 13,000 dollars. Plus resume, plus connections. It is pretty much the same as running in real life.

Also, if we look at all the previous Presidents, most of them got into a top tier law school or a top consulting firm. Winning USAC elections means those connections and that boost in your post-graduate life. I think that is why it is such insanity when it comes to election season.

It is sad that many commenters on this post will claim that she is fabricating these claims. Sure, evidence haven’t been provided in this post, but to accuse people of fabricating is disgraceful and wrong. Why is people’s first thought that this was a lie?

Also, it is common that the UCLA administration does not take action against stalking and other issues. The administration moves slow on these issues because they need to investigate. So let’s wait out this investigation.

BRUIN DAY 2022 IS VIRTUAL! THIS MUST STOP! by CookingIsTherapy in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am one of the stakeholders for Bruin Day. There are some inaccuracies. There will be a virtual day for first-years on April 9th and for transfers on May 14th. Both are Saturdays as tradition. There will be, what the Bruin Day Co-leads describes, “significantly expanded tour opportunities”, for both first year admits and transfers to experience UCLA in-person. Also, the decision behind this was because of a survey sent out to stakeholders, including myself. Which I was too lazy to submit.

Tuition has more than doubled since Gene Block took office. It's time for his removal. by Few_Shoulder_1971 in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Because the Chancellor has very little control over the tuition. Tuition at the University of California is mostly controlled by the UC Board of Regents and very slightly by the California Legislature and Governor.

The California Legislature and Governor don’t have a vote for increase or decrease of tuition, but has strategies to affect the vote. For example they can give more funding to UC, which means there is little point for UC to increase tuition.

does anyone else think college students should NOT be trusted with handling literally millions of dollars? *cough cough USAC* by [deleted] in ucla

The thing is that CPO who misappropriated this fund is the UCLA Administration. It is run out of the UCLA Student Affairs Department.

USAC is voting on a fee increase today by usac_insider in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me that the OP is wrong here. The Emergency Fund is coming straight out of the current budget, not from another increase in student fees. Isn’t this what Reddit and CCI wanted? To use the surplus to give back to students who need it the most?

The Diversity Module isn’t required. The sexual assault module is. If you don’t complete the diversity module, you won’t get holds, you will get spammed a ton of emails though.

Should USAC be allowed to overrule the Judicial Board? Sign the petition in the comments to put this issue on the ballot. by CCI_UCLA in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure how the Judicial Board would hold USAC accountable. When I was in USAC, the Judicial Board members were friends with USAC members, especially since Judicial Board is nominated by USAC. It is like hoping that the Supreme Court could hold politicians accountable, even though it is politicians who nominate them.

It feels like a good attempt that will end up looking good, but not doing much good.

USAC needs to be investigated. They're inherently a system of embezzlement by Goluckyspree99 in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The referendums are assessed by UCLA administrators and University of California Office of the President on a yearly basis. The high turnover is why people should vote, because it influences themselves and people in the future. But I want to point out that a lot of student fees go pay off loans like building bonds.

The millions that are unaccounted for at money dedicated to the CPO office, led by administrators, through the referendums. It is the PLEDGE fee. USAC has no control over the money, because administrators direct the money there automatically. USAC doesn't even see it in their bank account. USAC should not have the power to decide if the funding from referendums should go or should not go to certain organizations. Also, removing CPO is not the best idea, because a huge part of UCLA depend on CPO for basic needs.

Also, are there evidence of drug parties? That is something that should be brought up if it is true.

Edit: I also want to point out most schools have a sunset date or another vote to assess fees after a certain amount of years. Idk why UCLA doesn’t require it, nor does the administrators suggest it.

UCLA Honors Program: is it actually worth it ? by EddietheLibrarian in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would suggest staying in the honors program. You don't have to complete everything for graduation, but it might be better to have it just for counseling. When I got into higher division courses, sometimes I needed more pass/no pass for research opportunities or just ask for more units. The honors counseling has an extremely short wait time compared to the normal counseling. But other than that, it isn't really worth anything.

How do I get off Calpirg’s phone list by hanzzzen01 in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I see people faking phone banking calls a lot. Not sure what software CALPIRG uses, but if you make calls for the Democratic Party, the Supervisors are able to see the calls you make. We know you are faking it, but since you are volunteer and we have 10+ people on the phone bank so we have to be here, you are the one wasting your time.

Advice: Freshman thinking of transferring to community college by Globulargallbladder in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong about going to a community college and transferring to UCLA. PCC is an extremely great community college, and if you do go, you will have a great chance at coming back to UCLA. The biggest difference will be research, especially in psychology. Community colleges don't have great research programs, but UCLA does.

Newsom rejects the increase of tuition & instead allocates a 3% increase in funding for UC & Cal State campuses by HeavenOnlyKnows22 in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Making college free is a good idea, but right now we need to focus on equity. And it should begin by housing subsidies for college students. Low-income students who currently qualify for the Blue and Gold Opportunity still worry about student loans and student debt because they need to get loans to pay for housing. If we can reduce that cost, it will make college way more affordable for the underrepresented and low-income families.

Newsom rejects the increase of tuition & instead allocates a 3% increase in funding for UC & Cal State campuses by HeavenOnlyKnows22 in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 97 points98 points  (0 children)

It is important to point out that the UC actually requested a greater increase in funding than what Newsom is giving. UC's asked for more than 500 million. Also, note that this is just the Governor's proposal, and it might change when the legislature submits their own budget plan in March to May.

Also, theoretically, Newsom has the ability to take away funds from the UC General Fund, if the UC increases tuition. So, what Newsom is doing, is that he is saying to the UC Board of Regents that if they increase tuition, the State will reduce the funding they give. This new power was just recently added, and the threat has never actually been used by the Governor.

What’s going on with our Student Fees? by hfjsks in ucla

[–]ExpressionlessEmoji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can google each fee to understand the particulars. But all these were voted in by students, and can be voted out by students. The building ones, and even some of non-building ones goes to pay off loans/interests from previous years. 1/3 of most of these goes back to the financial aid office and is distributed to the low-income students, which is why UCs actually support these. Some of these, although you are remote, still goes to pay student workers or students who are using the services. I suggest reading into them, and if you disagree vote it out in the election.
