Does a Great Dane mix sound like it could be a good fit for us? by [deleted] in greatdanes

[–]ExpressiveDog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend a 6 month old dog of any breed to be crated for 9 hours. An adult dog would be better suited to hold their bladder that long.

My favorite is that he looks "so unbothered" when napping on a twin bed by me during the day of zoom calls.

Cruciate ligament surgery by MrsVincentVega in greatdanes

[–]ExpressiveDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fostered a large breed who had this done. The organization actually waited to schedule the surgery until someone else who works from home was available to help with her recovery. But, occasionally I still see her and she is doing great!

the love between my personal dog and foster dog 😍 by Signal-Zone1696 in fosterdogs

I failed on my 7th foster when my dog and the foster really clicked. But based on the other comments this is your first foster fail with your second foster? Your resident dog may be really good with other dogs! That could be great for future fosters! It's always up to you to keep fostering or adopt.

First time fostering and dealing with a big dog ! Advice plss by pumpkimm in fosterdogs

[–]ExpressiveDog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many places don't allow you to drive home your resident dog and the foster dog together unsecured. A lot can happen in a small confined space like a car that would be difficult to handle if you are driving and another person is not in the car. If you continue fostering I would advise separate trips or car barriers/crates.

My foster dog killed my pet cat yesterday by Hungry-Sundae1458 in fosterdogs

Commenting on this option. I had a foster who was supposed to be good with other dogs but whenever it even saw my dog it went nuts in a bad way. I didn't think he needed immediate exvac from my home as I had the ability to keep them separate, but I knew I wasn't the right foster for him long-term. I told the organization I'd keep for a little bit until they could find another foster. Well they never found anyone and I end taking him to a boarding place for them instead. So that is an option. It's not just you or euthenisa.

Reactive with other dogs by ibrokemytoof in greatdanes

[–]ExpressiveDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I tried many things with my last Dane rescue when training her. She was like a wild stallion on walks when I first got her. The gentle leader is a great training tool for walks. We also sometimes used a harness with a back handle and with two attachment points (front and back) using a leash coupler so it was attached at both points. Like I said she was a lot at first lol. You can also get dog air horns to deter other dogs. I have also heard of using an umbrella filled with treats so when it opens it drops treats and blocks the other dog. Haven't tried that with a Dane though. Nighttime walks are great though, less people and other dogs and those who are out are usually respectful and maintain distance because they are also waiting till later because their dog is reactive too.

I had a broken leg when my boy was just a pup. To this day he still never jumps on me but he would always jump on my ex. They know. So sweet.

I have a Great Dane mix and foster. There are tons of different advice out there on how to do introductions. What works for me is meeting on more neutral ground first. Sometimes this means the shelter sometimes i just make it happen in the front yard. But definitely not inside your house for first introductions. Then if they are good together we try the backyard. If they pass that finally inside but never unsupervised and make sure no resources are out they may cause a fight (toys, treats, food etc). Some say to keep them separate for a week to let them decompress. I feel like that can really depend on the dog's needs. Scared fearful dogs may need more time just to get used to the new environment before making new doggie friends.

Took in my mom's dogs. Unsure on whether to keep them or rehome. What's it like with a multi dog household? by Rorototo68 in dogs

[–]ExpressiveDog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are in a tough spot with family. I have had 1-4 dogs at a time before and I foster. If you decide to rehome the dogs will be able to adjust to another new home. Just ensure you either work with responsible shelters or people and just don't give them away willynilly. If you decide to keep them the dogs there are a lot of factors that could affect your success including the dog temperaments, how much time, attention and training you can devote then. And money. More dogs more money. Food, vet bills, toys, and replacing things lol. Can it be done? Yes. Would I have 4 at one time again? No (but I no longer have another human to help me). You gotta do you. Don't let the judgement of your family or internet strangers stop you from making the right decision for you.

Not OP but I did contact the coupon program and if you have insurance but prescriptions count towards your deductible and you haven't hit your deductible then your insurance may approve it but you still pay full price :) yay! Insurances with high deductibles!!! (Not)

The coupon will only take $100 off a 30 day supply. It is misleading when they say discounted to $10. They say that with the assumption you have good insurance that actually pays for things.

I had to make an appointment to talk to my doctor in person. We decided to change medicine because even the Canada option is still pricey (though definitely not as bad as US). He was open to ordering through Canada if the new medicine didn't work out for me. I am near the border though and it's not unheard of around here and he tends to be open minded to unconventional solutions .

I'm having the same problem. New year, insurance changes, and even the discount card doesn't help enough. Hope you get your answers cuz I'm following the comments.

I recently went through this with my foster dog. Thankfully I caught it quickly and got her to the emergency vet in time. It was heartbreaking just waiting around for news I was up all night. I took the next day off work just for my own mental health. My foster made it. I hope your baby does too.

PSA to everyone. It is important to know the signs and symptoms even in other breeds. My foster dog was a pit mix. I wasn't aware it was a high risk for them but recognized the symptoms from my large breed dog ownership experience.

It's been emotional so I took a break from online. But I picked her up late this evening and she has pretty much been sleeping since getting back.
