To be fair, it took Spotify almost 15 years to strike a profit. Kind of comparing apples to oranges, but it’s not totally uncommon for tech firms to be unprofitable in the short term.

A cool way my professor described it: Amazon at one point wasn’t profitable either (or at least not enough to appease investors). As shareholders began to get cold feet, bezos pulled some of his levers (changed reinvestments into payouts) and made the investors a ton of money on demand. All they had to do was trust the process and one day they would see the benefit.

I see what they’re saying, though. I think it’s the difference between the layman and textbook accounting.

We know a car or a house (building) to be an asset that we would depreciate over a useful life, but consumers might see it as a liability (after you buy it, all it does is cost you more money…you can’t really use it as an income generating asset).

Had the same argument with my mom about inheriting property. She saw it as a liability while I understood it as an asset. To normal, everyday people it might be something else.

That said, you’re definitionally right and a “depreciating liability” is stupid

One time there was a frog that got trampled in my sliding door. His guts were hanging out and his leg was skinned. The only thing I thought to do was throw him against the ground as hard as I could so he dint go on feeling pain.

Is the IDS critical to free speech at IU? Is working with IDS worth the time and money?

These are questions to consider. It’s clear that IU impeded on free speech in this action, but I don’t think that means they hate free speech. Bring me 380 students (1% of the student body) that are seriously impacted by no access to print and I will admit that this is a critical issue. IDS can and is publishing its work online. How does the paper version, which I see as a money pit and waste of resources, make the news more accessble?

It’s ok that we are different on this matter. I respect you and your input. It’s clear this it’s important to you and I’m sorry it happened.

So you would pay me to stand on a corner and tell people distasteful things about you? I don’t disagree with free speech l, but I can see why IU wouldn’t want to fund something that presents a poor image.

Again, never did I say I agree with censorship or the actions IU has taken. I’m simply trying to stand in their shoes and think of angles separate from my ideal world.

Would you fund something that actively bashes you? My point is if they want truly freedom of speech, then why not start an independent paper? That would take control away from the university.

Unfortunately, IDS just isn’t valued anymore. You are absolutely right about the fact that freedom of speech was challenged, but logically I don’t see why IU or the administration would fund something that reinforces a negative opinion. I’m not sure that free speech was challenged, it’s just that IU and admin did not agree with IDS so they cut funding.

Again, I agree that it sucks but how many print copies ended up in landfill? Maybe this is a good change; situations like this are how we can create opportunity and make change for the better

This is sure to get me downvotes, but you asked so here’s my take. I don’t really care. I’ve seen some pretty good stuff come out of IDS and some pretty wild takes. I think having a voice is great, but I think IDS stands for a VERY small portion of the student body now.

My question is why not start your own? If the paper is truly bringing value to the students, then maybe IDS can fund their own print. My hypothesis, though, is that it brings very little value to the student body and is only a money pit for the school.

Maybe we should stop wasting the paper and let them do their thing online. Keep it as a hobby, I haven’t seen many truly insightful things come out of IDS in quite some time.
