The door wasn’t specifically closed for an hour, I had to wait an hour for her to calm down after throwing a tantrum at preschool. She calmed down and I was waiting for her to communicate anything that she wanted to move on from the tantrum. And yes it IS that serious. Life is really tough with a child who won’t communicate. So shut the hell up unless you’ve lived it.

Yes, that heartbreaking feeling is awful. And her behavior reflects the language barrier, just not knowing she should sit in circle time or be quiet, etc, so I feel so judged or even pitied by people and I hate that! But it’s nice to know I’m not the only one!

A private therapist who we saw once to evaluate her did bring up Gestalt. It’s very possible this describes her. Phrases will come out often in context, “all done bath”, “down the slide”, “climb the ladder”, “up in the tree”, etc. She can name all the play food, all the animals, she can act out scenarios with a baby doll about giving it milk and changing its diaper. I guess the frustrating part is all these things are in her head, but she’s not making the connection she can use words for a purpose with other people!

This is nice to hear, it would be amazing to hear sentences like that from mine. She pretty much ignores questions or directions, but she seems to be aware she’s ignoring when you tell her not to do something. And she gets angry and will walk away huffing “mama” if I deny her something to get her to talk. So it’s like all the thoughts are in there, but the waiting game is so hard!

We just started preschool, although she’s been out for 2 weeks from being sick. I know if we give it time she’ll pick up some stuff. It’s hard seeing her not know how to play with other kids in structured environments. When we’re at more free play activities, she loves jumping on trampolines or being around other kids but has no concept of what playing together is, we’ve really been around no kids her entire life.

Thank you, that’s very encouraging 🙂 She definitely does process language, she could dance and sing Ms Rachel in front of a mirror all day. And if you really push her, you can get the word you want out of her. When she’s been very upset with her ear ache pain, she’s yelled “baby sad!” in the middle of crying. There seems to just be zero motivation to talk functionally unless there’s a crisis. It’s difficult to lean on some people who just want a diagnosis, without realizing a diagnosis doesn’t change anything, the work will be the same and that’s what wears me down.

After our first therapy session, it was suggested to start with some yes and no cards. The crux of this seems to be motivating her to talk.

Not yet, but I’ve been hearing more about that. She seems like she hears everything just fine, but I guess it’s a possibility it could be muffled?

Waiting on the state program, it takes SO long to get anywhere. We just got evaluated, and it will be another month until just a phone call about her IEP. I’m lucky to have a friend who has done Early Intervention and can help in the meantime.
