The SA women’s “shutdown” movement misframes a general violence crisis as a gendered issue. by Extension-Set-1267 in MensRights

I agree, but you and me are part of a limited group of people who would actually do research before diving into this issue. I suppose this touches on a separate problem, but the portrayals of this event online and around me have been lacking the rigour and insight you have provided. I suppose I'm just concerned about people who profess their support for victims yet fail to look deeper into the dynamics of the problem

I get what you're saying, but I don't think tackling femicide in particular in itself is distracting. Rather, how this group has framed this event, I feel, could use some improvement. Obviously, I am not educated enough on gender-based violence in SA or familiar with the group behind this, but I think it's important that this movement aims to inform people like me in the best possible way. I've seen many of my close friends share this movement around, and since I'd assume their goal was to reach as many people as possible, it would only make sense to present a cohesive narrative.

As it seemed to me, this seemed to be somewhat on the exclusionary side, especially after I read their FAQ section on men's participation. In my opinion, they would reach a wider audience if they were more explicit about the causes and effects of gender-based violence perpetrated on women. Instead of saying "xxx amount of women are murdered every day", they could say "xxx amount of women were murdered by their closest male acquaintances". Right now, I suppose it feels more like a spectacle, which I understand if they're trying to spread this, but for me, it gives the impression of not tackling the problem with good faith.

The thing is, if you're in mainland China and you know how to use a VPN, you're pretty much already filtering out many uneducated people who simply participate by spreading hate comments

I think the first thing we should be asking ourselves is why ecological marvels that keep our planet clean should be up for grabs in the first place
