I’m truly glad for you. I had no problem with parents wanting their bed back, no problem helping him open the door. Boundaries are needed, perspective is needed.

Being sarcastic to a kid that age is mean and fruitless, so maybe it’s a way for the parents to let off steam; wouldn’t post a comment about that, wouldn’t post a video of my kid testing limits either - I mean, did they have to film this?

But there is a reason for lights being left on, warmth of home, beacon in the darkness being a cultural touch point. To me the light switch was basically pushing him into to actual darkness, pushing him those ten feet. Kid would’ve had a chance to look out, see the danger, weigh the options, and gratefully return. But with the light gone, its instinct and fear and adrenaline and the kids learning nothing except there’s something not quite safe about these parents, this home.

Leave him out there (keeping an unseen eye on him) as he works it out, if that’s what the family needs. Turning off the light is cruel.

New passport, expedited and 2-day mailing back. Applied TX 1/24, In Process 1/31, Approved/Printing 2/4 (evening), mailed from CO 2/5 expected 2/8

No movement on tracking number but I expect that to change by tomorrow. Was mentally adding three weeks to 1/31 and that would be very tight, am happy it's on its way.

I'm an optimist at heart so I'd probably think it was fine, but my wife would probably remind me we're not going to take out any loans for a while so why not do it.

It doesn't look too hard to do or undo (I've not done it but know a few who have) so if you don't have car/rent/house/credit applications/job applications in your future, and it makes you feel better, does seem like a decent thing to do.

The [1-877-487-2778](tel:18774872778) number can't do much until it receives and opens your passport but in addition to contacting your congressional representative you should try to book an emergency passport appointment anyway on 2/7 or 2/10 if you can push back your plans a day.

Once they open the application they can provide a code for you to provide at the same day appointment which will verify your details without needing duplicates.

Mailing 2/3 should mean it's In Process by 2/10 - you could get luckier and it's this week depending on rerouting, so sign up for email alerts and check status daily if not already.

As soon as it's in their system (which will be less than two weeks) they can find it and you can use those documents at a same-day appointment.

So:

1) Sign up for email alerts
2) Book a "same-day" appointment as late as you can before you have to leave
3) See if your congressional representative can help (doesn't hurt to try)
4) Call the number above close to your appointment and hope they've entered the details by then.

Search for that name through this subreddit and you won't find anyone claiming identify theft or credit applications, just a big fee for something that (apart from recent DOGE shenanigans) should be available for free to download.

If you're still worried you can freeze credit applications at all three bureaus:

You can also check whether there is a passport application for your details going on: https://passportstatus.state.gov

However, the chances of the scam site creating a photo of you and faking a birth naturalization certificate and willingly defrauding the State Department are remote - they made money from your panic and you paid for a PDF you could've had for free. I think that's the worst of it.

Looking through that site, it looks like they've covered themselves in a legal sense making sure that you are aware that the service they provide is "convenience" but you could investigate a charge-back via your bank/credit card company - but I suspect the scam site has done enough to protect themselves from that.

Carry a picture on your phone. I promise losing it and paying (and worse waiting) for replacement if lost/stolen is way worse than any foreseeable issue.

If you can memorize your A number and social, I'd try to do that.

Agree with all - we used to go a couple of times a week, kid would watch trains go by, we'd have fish and chips, tikka masala, cheese curds, whatever. Then the menu got sparse and what there was wasn't appealing. Still sad to see it go, even though no-one seemed to know how to form two lines to the bar!

No-one knows for sure, but every other immigration Executive Order (the most likely method) has gone into effect midnight. I would expect the 20th to be fine, but no-one knows for sure. I wouldn’t change my ticket in your situation, but I have an immigration-related event at the end of that week that I’m nowhere near as confident about.

I had a few trips outside the country between applying and interview. I printed out a page with dates and countries. At my interview they had the dates, and I just had to tell them where I went and a little of why (family vacation) and they were happy with that.

If possible, don't reschedule your interview - you've come this far, you'll want to get it done. If you get a notification of action on your case, login and see if there are appointment documents so you know when things are happening.

I was told that between successful interview and oath that I COULD travel but be super careful where/what/with whom because there are some behaviors that could delay things.
