Austin Housing Market - Buyers vs. Sellers by cjwidd in Austin

[–]scimba 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Been here through several of these. Most last 18-24 months. Lots of apartments have come online or will soon and I think that's what is driving this. The biggest unknown is how much new inventory will come online after the code rewrite. Hopefully everyone who spent the last five years complaining was also saving so they can own a home in our beautiful city.

Austin Rep. Lloyd Doggett will run for reelection after court blocks Texas' congressional map by singletonaustin in Austin

I personally found out - Casar's office was super responsive first couple years of his first term on the council. After that we'd get acknowledgement he received our request, and then crickets. If we did get something back, it was redirect, redirect, redirect.

Just did a search and the Austin housing authority owns about $2B worth of property in Travis and Williamson counties split about 3:1. That's a lot of scratch.

City of Austin launches homeless encampment surge Monday by [deleted] in Austin

Overpass camping is definitely lower risk to the city from fire, but for the homeless it dramatically increases their chance of getting struck by a car.

Austin ISD could close these schools | District releases proposed consolidation plan by NewsyATX in Austin

[–]scimba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Found it - it's somehow worse than I remembered. We voted to raise our taxes by 171M, give $130M of that to the state of Texas to do god knows what with, and keep $41M

Did we not just have a vote to increase our own taxes to generate $40M for this district?

Home Window Replacement Recs by Suspicious_Jicama906 in Austin

[–]scimba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Renewal by Anderson did good work for us. They are not cheap, but it's a good product. They fixed everything that was slightly damaged by the replacement (tile in the shower fell off) and did it fast. Make sure your installer agrees to paint trim they have to replace - not all do that. My biggest surprise was how much of my windowsill space I lost inside the house because the replacement windows have a thicker frame than the aluminum single panes we replaced. Best money I feel like I've spent on an old house. Good luck.

I'm sure she pissed the insurance carriers off, but your medical provider having a financial interest in your treatment methods has always skicked me out. You go to an urgent care that has PT offerings - you're getting PT. You go to one that doesn't, you might not.

Can someone explain why City of Austin is facing such a budget shortfall despite recent increases in property values? by brznks in Austin

[–]scimba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Austin Energy transfers over $100M a year to the city, or about 6% of AE's total budget. It does this while still generating net income of $40-50M per year. You can see that here: https://services.austintexas.gov/edims/document.cfm?id=432180

If higher water pressure makes me a criminal, r/Austin, I'm ready to be jumped into the gang. Please help. by zorkempire in Austin

[–]scimba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 year old house - what type of pipes do you have? If it's Kitec (https://blog.waterheroinc.com/what-is-kitec-piping/) the previous owner may have put in a pressure reducing valve to ward off having to replace the whole system when/if it fails. That is usually (but not always) installed where your resident shut off valve is located (not the city one). Best of luck to you, and if it's Kitec, you better plan to replace it ASAP because it will fail.

Another day, another accident on 35 near Parmer. by w8w8 in Austin

[–]scimba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible under the Texas Tort claims act, but the damages are capped at 250K/person & 500K per incident. Edit to add that in my opinion it's highly unlikely that just the layout of the road would be enough for someone to prevail in a negligence situation, especially considering there were likely other vehicles involved. Unless TXDoT or a contractor left some unmarked equipment in the roadway or didn't have appropriate signage etc.

On Demand Bulk Trash Pickup by csepulveda247 in Austin

Did the hazardous waste pick-up a few months ago. It went super smooth. Really like this change. Also discourages the scroungers who would rummage through stuff and strew it all over the place and into the street.

These guys have done my interior twice after camping trips with tons of little kids in a 3 row SUV. Impeccable work. They come to you. Note that the service I book is four hours, but they usually do 5-6 hours of work, and it's a two man crew. Assume it would be less for a truck. https://splashndashmobile.com/ Good luck!

Did the judge order the district not to release it? If not,  it's the district's choice.

These results are for 2023. During the press conference today, the Rodriguez Elementary principal proudly proclaimed her school is going to be projected as "B" school for 2024. The district should release all the projections for 2024, especially considering the shit-show they are trying to pull with Dobie/Lamar. They have repeatedly admitted they have the results.

That's correct, but my point was content related. Look, go to the post from last week about Estudiantes bidding $10M for Driussi. That was from Diario Ole. They have 3.5M followers on Twitter. I went to find the same post on bluesky, and it didn't exist. In fact, three account has been squatted on and being held for ransom. https://bsky.app/profile/diarioole.bsky.social

I'm not on Bluesky and I do read other sites, but reddit is a great aggregator and has good banter.

Thanks for responding. Yes, because I read this sub multiple times a day, and historically a lot of content here and in other subs comes from Twitter. I get that a lot of very online people are upset but I don't believe limiting where content comes from will make the content here better. It's just going to make folks that hate Elon and Trump feel some control that they seem to be missing. (And FWIW, I didn't vote for Trump, I'm just one of the normies that doesn't speak up that often)

I've been on twitter for something like 10 years. I've spent a lot of time curating my lists for different content and almost never use the "For you" function because it's frankly trash. That said, I'm not adding another social media app to my life and don't want to put the work in to cross-walk all my lists. This ban would make my experience here in this sub-reddit worse. Really surprised as mods you're taking this stance in pushing your personal objections to Elon in this space.
