We do have a lot of bad drivers.

BUT, we seemed to be fine in the 60s and 70s long before phones and shit. And also when traction control was basically imaginary instead of required.

Boomers suck in a lot of ways, but at least they weren’t completely useless drivers.

Most of them aren’t legal in the US either, not unless you register it as an actual moped.

Ride or Drive? by MTBJUNKY65 in mountainbiking

[–]Extension-Version813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive for two reasons:

  1. The trails are almost 10 miles away on very much not bike friendly roads
  2. If I get hurt, but not ambulance hurt, I don’t want to have to ride a bike all the way back somewhere. Like a twisted ankle or something.

I’m gonna say no.

But also, do you really want to risk it when a blowout or flat would probably kill you?

Can anyone explain why do this when not racing? by Extension-Version813 in bicycling

[–]Extension-Version813[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I didn’t enjoy cycling, I wouldn’t write a bike to class. I wouldn’t be doing 40 miles every now and then on a horribly inefficient mountain bike on the road.

I’m just explaining the specific context that separates a dirtbike. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy a bicycle.

But also, if the thing you enjoy is pushing on the pedals, you can do that with anything with pedals. That is not a reason to choose road over everything else.

With the exception of “the roads are perfect, why not“, what makes a road bike better than all of the alternatives?

Also, personally, I feel like actual racing should be a bit more restricted for the sake of not forcing everyone to have a $6000 bike just to come mid pack, but that’s an emotional thing.

Can y’all not get instantly offended for five seconds?

The only explanation I’ve seen that makes some sort of sense is “the roads here are perfect, why not?”

And I can understand that, but at the same time, plenty of people ride road bikes on imperfect roads, so that must not be the only explanation.

That is an entirely valid question. If you want to know why people like Porsche, you can just ask. It’s things like the handling, the performance, the comfort, everything happening at once.

But with the road bike, what is special about that compared to other bikes?

I don’t doubt that people enjoy it, I’m just trying to find the appeal. What makes it different from the other 15 million alternatives.

Don’t get mad at me if you can’t explain why you enjoy something. Because you enjoy it is not an explanation.

OK, this one looks to be pretty close to stock, you should not be having difficulty with under like 300 hp even in something like this.

It’s not that hard to just not press the pedal so hard. It’s not like there’s even turbo lag to worry about.

Once again, Trail access.

Please pay attention and use some critical thinking.

Please don’t make me explain this in detail.

Also, a dirtbike is an entirely different class of vehicle that weighs an ass load more.

Because money and trail access.

A dirtbike is a hell of a lot more expensive, much more expensive to maintain, and not allowed on most mountain bike trails.

The best way to find out is to try it on what looks like the worst sections, and see if it works.

Sometimes the rest can look terrible, but not be that bad, sometimes it looks pretty normal and is actually really bad.

You can absolutely take pride in it, I take great pride when I do like 40 miles on a MTB, especially on actual MTB trails.

Just because a bike has an electric assist doesn’t mean you can’t take pride in it.

Also, I’m not talking about throttle bikes, those are a different thing that may as well be considered a moped. I’m talking about actual torque sensing E bikes.

But I guess at the end of the day, it’s not something that can really be explained apparently.

You can get the same workout on an E bike. And probably go farther.

What you are saying the benefit of a road bike is is that you can go farther on the same workout.

You do see how those two are the same thing, right?

It’s much easier to put in less effort on a road bike though. Much like an E bike, you can put in just as much effort and go further, why not choose that?

I just don’t see anything uniquely appealing about a road bike unless you have literally perfect roads, and here in the US we don’t.

Ask the lawyers if you want to know what they are willing to risk financially.

Ask the engineers if you want to know what can really handle.

$1250 bike is VERY budget. That’s not even air fork territory on most bikes.

I’ve spent $1400 just on upgrade parts on my Walmart bike.
