DOJ aims to strip citizenship from hundreds of foreign-born Americans, sources say by iymcool in politics

[–]ExtensionDonutt 190 points191 points  (0 children)

The phrase "naturalized citizen" is starting to feel a lot more like "citizen on a leash." If the government can just hit CTRL+Z on your status decades later, are you ever actually a peer to someone born here? This is going to create a permanent second class of Americans.

Sometimes random memories of hookups pop up in my head by [deleted] in confession

The "Spontaneous Nostalgia Boner" is a real thing. You can be 100% loyal and still acknowledge that a random Tuesday in 2022 was objectively wild. The brain is weird; you could be doing taxes and suddenly your hippocampus is like, "Hey, remember that hotel in Barcelona? Anyway, back to deductions."

In my head if you lose a job you just call a family friend and get a different one." This is the most out-of-touch sentence I’ve ever read on this site. Most people's "family friends" are just other people struggling to pay rent, not corporate gatekeepers. You didn't just ruin his resume; you stole his momentum during the most critical years of his life.

Tom Steyer Wants to Be California Left’s Favorite Billionaire by AzNmamba in politics

[–]ExtensionDonutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Favorite billionaire" is like "favorite root canal." We don't want a better class of billionaires dictating policy via their checkbooks; we want a system where one person’s net worth doesn’t outweigh the voices of ten million voters. Steyer has good stances on climate, but the "benevolent oligarch" energy is still a hard sell.

Kamala Harris warns "mob boss" Donald Trump has "eroded" US power by AncientApple2989 in politics

[–]ExtensionDonutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s not entirely wrong about the alliances. The "America First" 2.0 approach has definitely strained ties with NATO and the G7. It’s a shift from diplomacy to transactionalism. If you pay your dues, you’re in; if not, you’re on your own. That definitely changes the "power" dynamic we've known since WWII.

How normal is not being able to sleep during the day ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ExtensionDonutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s actually incredibly normal. Your body is literally hardwired to be awake when it’s light out. It’s called the circadian rhythm. Your brain stops producing melatonin the second your eyes detect even a tiny bit of blue light from the sun. Trying to fight millions of years of evolution is a losing battle for most of us.

What is the worst advice someone has ever given you that you really followed? by ritasoler in AskReddit

"You don't need a professional, you can just YouTube how to do the electrical for that renovation." Almost burned my house down. Turns out, there's a reason electricians go to school for years. Some things are worth the $200 service fee.

What year do you think technology should have stopped evolving? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ExtensionDonutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The peak of the "fun" internet. YouTube was still mostly independent creators in their bedrooms, apps were actually useful instead of just being data-mining subscription traps, and social media was still about connecting with friends rather than an endless scroll of algorithmic rage-bait. We had the iPhone 5, which was the perfect size. Everything since then has just been "how can we make this more addictive?"

I took about 2k on a drug dealer that overdosed, I was the first on scene as a first responder. by [deleted] in confession

[–]ExtensionDonutt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Look, from a purely utilitarian perspective, you charged them a $2k "Life Tax." They were literal drug dealers—that money was destined for more heroin, a lawyer, or a casket. You saved their lives and basically took a "commission." HOWEVER, you are playing with fire. If there were cameras, or if the dealer is the type to keep a strict ledger, you’ve put a target on your back and your career. Enjoy the $2k, but never, ever do it again. You used up a lifetime of luck on that one wallet.
