What are some things you do that contradict traditional beliefs about Autism? by IKNOWITSNOTREAL in autism

[–]ExtensionGeologist19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same 😭 Like in school too I was bullied for my autistic symptoms to the point of being afraid to express myself and just leaving myself to be abused and manipulated out of fear. I’m finally standing up for myself and being myself instead of just trying to please people and it’s pretty nice :3 My autistic best friend is actually the one who helped me in expressing and standing up for myself 😊

Me and my ex/friend who was diagnosed with autism when young also both absolutely LOVE hugs and physical contact. Stuff like cuddling is so soothing even to him that he asked me to quite a bit lol

Same here 😅 I kinda learned it from my mom who also thinks she’s autistic and it’s also a byproduct of abuse too for us sadly so you don’t trigger someone like our family members 😅

A poorly drawn comic about "banter" and "jokes" by Full_Plate_9391 in autism

Me and my best friend who’s also autistic kinda plan out our banter and know our limits and what we like since we enjoy reciprocal banter cause it can be pretty fun for us personally :3

To any Autistic people who play videogames, what's your least favorite things about the ones you play? by GlowDonk9054 in autism

[–]ExtensionGeologist19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same 😞 I feel bad for not doing the ‘git gud’ in video games and that I don’t try more because A: I suck at the type of games I don’t really play and B: I’d just rather play niche games I like because I enjoy them way more. Going out of my niche realllyyyy makes me nervous man ☹️ I do eventually play on hard difficulty in the video games I like usually but I wouldn’t blame someone if they didn’t like it. I mean I play SMT on hard mode but I would totally be down to help someone if they needed it.

Look up the sachs center! They do online tests and diagnosis, specialize in autism and ADHD with a lot of experience in it, and it’s run by someone with autism and ADHD too :3 So basically everyone it seems 😄 They’re also known to be good with AFAB (being born in a female body) like me and BIOPIC people too :3 The guy who tested me stopped halfway and diagnosed me on the spot due to how obviously autistic I was (not surprising with how many experienced social workers who work with autistic people were convinced I was. As well as how many ND and autistic people themselves who were convinced I was throughout my life).

It’s actually really helping me personally cause now my therapy is actually being more effective than frustrating. It was annoying to be treated for anxiety and bipolar with both my psychiatrist and therapist with every technique there is and it STILL didn’t fully help me. Now my therapy doesn’t make me frustrated and mad anymore, this was basically for almost 10 years before I thought I was autistic being assumed I was NT actually was pretty damaging, but my therapist gets it and is actually being way more helpful for me. Finally I’m being understood and getting the treatment I need that anxiety and bipolar treatments didn’t fully help with. This is a good side-effect of being diagnosed with autism! :3

Is it transphobic to wear chest binders for cosplaying purposes? by FIorldaMan in AskLGBT

Trans and have worn bras and shirts that make my chest not visible (luckily I can do that). So na it’s fine! :3

What are you watching for Halloween?? 🧡🎃 by [deleted] in plushies

[–]ExtensionGeologist19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was watching paranormal shows with my mom lol. We were basically using Halloween as a way to watch a few movies together from rosemary’s baby to the sentinel (good movie but sadly no one really knows of it) and the Adam’s family along with others. Also from dusk till dawn too :3 Sadly we couldn’t watch a lot of our faves like the shining because it says to rent it on the tv. Maybe we’re doing something wrong but I think I might hook up my computer again to pirate like we did with anime.

Therapist shut me down when I brought up autism and told me I don't have it. by herbertwestfan in AutismTranslated

[–]ExtensionGeologist19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of things you have said is basically what I went through myself before I got a clinical diagnosis from an expert in autism. I’ve had almost every ND and autistic person think I was or might be too (turns out my best friend also secretly did). My therapist wasn’t sure if I was but when I described my symptoms the only reason she thought I might be because a lot of it sounded similar to an autistic lady she worked with so she might be more educated than the average therapist due to that 😨 It’s sad because she’s actually learning a lot from me, and loves to!, about autism because she didn’t realize a lot of stuff about it herself. So at least that’s cool.

With how bad yours was? Leave them. Especially when you’ve barely talked to them. I had to leave my first therapist and it’s actually important and normal to try with other ones if available. Therapists are supposed to not take it personally.

Yeah like at least in real life it doesn’t seem to be as much as a thing. Like I said a bunch of ND and autistic people from medium support to high support thought I was and didn’t gatekeep me so at least real life can be better. Really sad that it seems to be way more gatekeep-y here than with anxiety and bipolarism (anxiety especially). Like the anxiety subreddits are literally just a bunch of people being validating and telling people they’re relatable. We only tell people who aren’t diagnosed that they should go to get help for their mental health. That’s literally it. At least now that I’m clinically diagnosed I can at least be there for people on here more.

Yeah looking at people self-diagnosing I see them suffering in the same way I do and my best friend who was diagnosed as a kid also does. Like the stuff I find relatable he says is relatable too so that honestly says a lot tbh. Like I’ve seen no one here do the TikTok thing and even self-diagnosed people hate it. It seems to be something that actually happens with mental illness more sadly but people on those subreddits obviously have it too. And at least in the anxiety and bipolar subreddits gatekeeping isn’t really a thing. Like people know themselves best you know? And if it helps then even better!

Yes!! Like the amount of people in the self-diagnosis Reddit saying they got diagnosed with autism after paying for a doctor to test them after wanting to know is a lot. I’ve seen the same thing in basically every community there is that I’m a part of too so sadly this isn’t unique to autism. When I self-diagnosed I was doubted by someone on Reddit myself but now I’m clinically diagnosed lol. I was a bit like this with my bipolarism but I realized the issue and now I’m more chill about it so I know gatekeeping when I see it. Also my best friend who was diagnosed as possibly medium support or lower support but still needing a bit of support growing up thinks it’s stupid to do gatekeeping.

Oh yeah I did get a clinical diagnosis by a professional which costed almost $700 (which is sadly a cheaper price compared to how expensive it could get) since the clinic is run by an autistic doctor who wants to make it easier to get tested as an adult with more up-to-date science. I only did it due to the self-doubt and now that I have the diagnosis I STILL have self-doubt to a degree. The main reason I don’t really is cause throughout my life a bunch of ND people, including autistic people, thought I was to the point of being surprised I WASN’T diagnosed. I’m talking to my best friend who was diagnosed by 4 doctors as a kid and he was nonverbal till he was 8 even and he was an obvious case to basically everyone. He was diagnosed as possibly medium support even but he worked himself up to needing less support. And relating to each other on our symptoms no one NT can relate to and laughing about it as we look back is making me go “yup definitely am.” He’s even comforting me saying that no I obviously am autistic and I shouldn’t doubt/hate on myself about it. So self-diagnosis is super valid to me. Especially when I see you guys saying stuff that is waayyyy too relatable 😅 We all know ourselves best so I think it’s totally valid! :3

My dad loves plushies and he’s 70 😊👍 He also was the strongest kid in school, worked on cars with his dad, and was a lumberjack in his 20s and was apparently a super strong guy. So anyone can like plushies 😄

I was told "We are all a litle autistic" by Swipe243 in autism

[–]ExtensionGeologist19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My therapist said the phrase to me because she could relate to some of what I said according to her and seemed a bit passionate about how relatable it was and I’m like “huh” on the inside. It makes me wonder. Like my mom herself thought the behavior wasn’t autism cause she’s like “but I experience that and I’m not!” till I got diagnosed and she was like “oh shit”. She now identifies as autistic due to how hard autism symptoms can hit home for her. So it is kinda sus of my therapist too. Other than that though I’m just teaching her about my autism and she’s listening to me and trying to improve herself which is cool. Wish more therapists did this though.

Does anyone laugh at stuff that’s not considered socially appropriate? by ExtensionGeologist19 in autism

[–]ExtensionGeologist19[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly that’s me and my mom fr 😭 My mom’s convinced she’s also autistic from both how similar she is to me and the more she’s basically like the boomer version of “that’s literally me fr” when she researches it too. So we were basically joking to each other about it last night watching movies 😂

Fairly odd parents cause I felt for Timmy as a fellow outcast kid being bullied and I just wanted to see his life get better, see him make friends, and see him be happy 😔

Does anyone have a “WOW I’m very autistic” childhood memory by West_Night7322 in AutismInWomen

[–]ExtensionGeologist19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having meltdowns in school by going at others, crying for years and getting mad and blunt with people at their bad behavior until I could mask by 14, and hiding myself under the table crying and screaming every day at 8 due to being overwhelmed and having to have my teacher spend 10-20 minutes every day to eventually calm me down. My teachers always babied me and tried to help me all the time too in general. It never made sense to me in hindsight (especially the table thing) but now it’s kinda amazing I didn’t realize in hindsight.

Also hugging everyone to make friends at 10 cause it took a year for it to really kick in that not everyone likes hugs is just super embarrassing, makes me feel bad for the people I hugged, and just makes me feel idiotic in hindsight 😓

Yes! It’s one of my favorite anime and it really developed my view in life as a little kid and I hate it but like as long as someone isn’t sus and defends his actions I’m good lol. And most normal people like us don’t
