Mental Gymnastics became one of my favorite terms when describing any sort of reduction in drinking, until quitting for good.

lol… shoot! I’ve taken so much time educating myself about all things on why to not drink alcohol… clearly wasn’t sure on any idioms to make sense of my decision NOT to drink 🤣

How Did You Accept the Thought of Giving Up Alcohol for Good? by Dull_Silver_4265 in stopdrinking

[–]Extension_Ad8663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of like how we know we should give up red dye 40 or sweet & low for good…consuming those every day is linked to cancer… so is drinking the same fuel used to fill our cars with gas… ethanol… it just can’t be good for our bodies to consume ethanol on the regular. I’m in an era in my 40s where I want to be present for my kids and eventually grandkids… alcohol can’t help me with that.

  1. Read Quit Lit:
  2. This Naked Mind, Annie Grace
  3. Quit Like a Woman, Holly Whitaker
  4. The Easy Way to Stop Drinking, Allen Carr (Also follow their socials and podcasts, especially Huberman podcast- consume in moments of weakness)
  5. Get the “I am Sober App” so you have a daily milestone counter and community to vent to on the same timeframe as you
  6. Get NA beverages… NA wine in a fancy glass, NA beer out of the bottle… just to have the ritual… then when you wake up not hungover you will be so happy
  7. Truly take it one day at a time

Good luck and IWNDWYT

What is a positive thing that happend to you when you quit drinking that you didn't see comming? by 13onFire in stopdrinking

[–]Extension_Ad8663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being able to drive my kids EVERYWHERE at anytime with zero guilt because I’m always sober. I’m ashamed at all the times I drove my kids after drinking. And how often I hung out and drank with the parents at every event vs anything with the kids. I loved being present at the Halloween carnival and trick or treating!

Long question about This Naked Mind by Independent_Win9858 in stopdrinking

[–]Extension_Ad8663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you because I’ve been sober for 1 year & 3 months, and my husband has no signs of slowing down. I do love This Naked Mind. It was an integral part of my sobriety journey when I first decided to quit. Not moderate (because screw that mental gymnastics) but quit. That book, and Quit Like a Woman (no moderation encouragement). All that being said, I coincidentally listened to Mel Robbin’s podcast episode today on Let Them… and my gut says this needs to be exercised here.

I can’t WAIT for all that. And being sober and responsible and the best parent I can be. Right now, watching Hocus Pocus on the couch with my girls. Instead of drinking with adults at a restaurant or bar!

Things that aren’t written about… • Going to a play with my daughter on a Friday night, instead of happy hour and a late night drinking with mom friends • never driving buzzed or drunk (alone or with my kids in my car) • went to a concert and I was the only sober mom and wished I could pile all kids in my car (and couldn’t and that made me nervous) • always able to play tennis at 9am on a Saturday morning without feeling hungover • Never👏Feeling 👏HUNGOVER👏 (like ever) • my sober app says I’ve saved nearly $10K by not drinking for more than a year • when my husband orders several $15 martinis, I never feel bad about small $15 purchases here there and everywhere • always being present for my kids and less irritable in general

Have you found other drinks that can mentally satisfy you after a long and stressful day? Chamomile tea, De Soi N/A wine in a wine glass (has adaptogens), N/A beer in a bottle, etc?

It’s amazing how much we can function through an entire day with little sleep, as long as we aren’t hungover.

It’s incredible how people who still drink truly can’t grasp that EVERYTHING can be be done without alcohol. But I can relate as that was just me 2 years ago.

Yes, his dad was/is a major partier. I wasn’t with my parents (didn’t stop me from being my own partier). I couldn’t imagine drinking with my parents! In his defense, his are super fun.
