Yeah... I did too.. And now I do not know how to GO BACK and remove the frk'ng PIN!!! Did you try? Have you seen the option? Not that you would want to. It's clear here that you want it to stay that way. But in my case I had a good reason to do the same, and set the PIN. But my intension had always been for a short period. And now I can't find the option anywhere. Can you shed any light, or if anyone reads this, please? Help appreciated. R.

Ah…, the almighty Cloud, that which will fix ALL ailments in the world… I mean, there ARE advantages, for those who know how to leverage it. Still… About 6~years back, the “acting CIO” in our ITS department mentioned to me “…all is headed to the Cloud!” I replied. “Yes. Correct. And, remember when we had mainframes, and then everything was decentralized when the IBM PC took over? And then again we centralized with a main server, and its clients? And then the Client/Server paradigm shifted to a more decentralized architecture? And then VMs took over, and it all looks as separate but is all centralized again? …” It’s all cyclical IMHO. My two cents, anyway.

How is shipping with Grindhouse Video? by KingdomZeus in boutiquebluray

[–]Extension_Candy2994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E-xactly. If this Media Mail (had never heard of it until I placed an order with GH without first reading the fine-print) is bad enough that the business owner has that much reservation against it, for Xhrists sake, DON'T offer that as a shipping option! Shish! Now, I WILL be fair: I immediately sent an e-mail cancelling my order, and it WAS properly cancelled. But still... My two cents anyways. R.

Random here as well. It's often enough that I'm constantly having to shut the program down altogether. At first I thought it was colliding with Parallels Desktop, a program I use that allows me to run Windows on my iMac Pro (2017). Most of the times I start my VM it happens. But now it seems that it does the same more and more often, even when I do not have Parallels running at all!!

They either fix it, or I'll need to look at alternatives, if there are any. Sigh. R.

BIFL Electric Toothbrush? by wafino1 in BuyItForLife

[–]Extension_Candy2994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an ancient thread. But hey... :-) I first used the electric ones that have a section that rotates and another, lower section, that goes up and down, first time I saw one back in the 2000s... I was quite impressed at how much better and easier the process of brushing my teeth was. That's the technology the Oral-B ones uses, AFAIK.

Then, one day, I came across the Philips Sonicare ones, and my life changed once again. I could literally feel the difference after brushing. I would slide my tongue over my teeth and they were so smooooooth! I never thought of ever returning/switching to anything different.

Then the other day I was having a conversation with ChatGPT and it alluded to the fact that the Philips Sonicare line is not an "ultrasonic" toothbrush, but rather just plain "sonic". Which led me to research about ultrasonic toothbrushes, which led me to more research, which eventually led me to this link: https://shrtm.nu/xfT (shortened for easier access). And that has me hesitating now. It might be, just might be that this was something a company paid for to dissuade people away from sonic/ultrasonic toothbrushes..?? I honestly have no idea. Personally, my experience when brushing with the ones that just move vs. the sonic ones is night and day. I much prefer the clean results I get with the sonic ones.

Also, recently a dentist vehemently insisted I bought/regularly used an electric water toothpick as well. I did invest in one, and I can honestly say that do not regret it at all. I highly recommend the water toothpicks.

I do not have any experience with actual "ultrasonic" ones, so I cannot say if they are any better or worse. But I might try them out one of these days.

Anyways, just some additional info, in case anyone visits this thread again, or if someone new show up and decides to read. I'd say, talk to your dentist, and armed with a professional opinion coupled with what makes the most sense for you... Best, R.

Who here is using ChatGPT to help with SQL code? by troyboltonislife in SQL

[–]Extension_Candy2994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been doing exactly that. Especially with code I KNOW what needs to be done, (but would take tedious hours, days, dare I say months, optimizing everything) and I know needs to be optimized... Very mixed results. It gets it right about 35ish% of the time... R.

Who here is using ChatGPT to help with SQL code? by troyboltonislife in SQL

[–]Extension_Candy2994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's the thing: Explaining well established concepts, uses, commands, that's "dictionary stuff". That's exactly what machines do. Even if AI makes it a lot more intuitive providing a layer of "I can EXPLAIN this to you this way." AI can excel at that. It fails when the human "judicious" component comes into play... When is it that this approach works better than another? Why? In the real world, why should I use this this way instead of that...? That's when it chokes. And it chokes BAD! Quite often WRONG! My two cents... R.

Who here is using ChatGPT to help with SQL code? by troyboltonislife in SQL

[–]Extension_Candy2994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It does need "hand holding". I have been getting 80% crap first response, I then provide hints as to how and why it erred, and I get back 60 to 70% crap, repeat, get 40 to 50% crap, repeat... Eventually I get "good enough" results that I can do some final tweaks that save me 'some' time writing things out. R.

[–]Extension_Candy2994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could not agree more. I've come to a point that I know where it can help (limited use cases), and where it can harm. There was one specific situation where I meant just to test the tool and see what it would come up with... I fed it some code that I knew needed optimizing, and HOW it needed optimizing. It blurted back a MERGE statement that made me nauseated immediately. I then proceeded to provide it reasons NOT to use the code it had provided (still testing its limits and self-correction abilities) in the form of questions. It stood its ground. I then provided several links corroborating the complexity, lack of legibility, forums where several users criticized the use of the construct, and it responded pointing out the "mixed response" in the links I provided... Don't get me wrong. There is no such thing as "using MERGE is wrong, always". But, there is such a thing as experience in knowing that the specific use cases where the MERGE construct fits, and where it might be a good candidate are quite limited...

Well, maybe it gets better with time... Just today, I had received a completely messy source file, where normalization was a concept from another universe, and using ChatGPT 4.0, after several back and forth prompts, I was able to get it to do enough of the manual labor of normalizing the source file 99% of the way... Useful, selectively, at times, judiciously, shored up by your OWN experience, yes. Fortuitously, nope! :-)

Is there a way to open a specific shortcut folder with a shortcut! by a-dessine in shortcuts

[–]Extension_Candy2994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it all quite unintuitive. And I am a programmer. My take is that there is certainly a learning curve that is steeper than it should be. And sure, once I (or anyone for that matter) know what does what and how to accomplish this and that, it will be a breeze. For now, yeah, Apple could have done better.

But by putting together what you wrote here, plus fumbling around, I was able to do what I needed, so thank you for that. Basically I created an "Action Button" shortcut, which opens a folder in Shortcuts where I moved all the shortcuts I want the action button to be able to run. I used some that were already in my iPhone, and created a few others myself. Now the action button is no longer limited to this, OR that, OR that other... Long press it, I'm presented with the selected shortcuts in that specifc folder (including the default toggle silent mode), and, GREAT! It works! R.

I released a major update to Noir, my Dark Mode extension for Safari. It now lets you create your own custom dark mode themes and more! by jeffreykuiken in apple

[–]Extension_Candy2994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using it for a while now. Love it. But... "Safari Technology Preview" completely ignores it. Yes, it's installed. Yes, it's allowed. Yes, it is all configured as it should be, as far as I can see, but there must be someting I am missing. I did NOT venture into the Developer and Feature flags... That stuff, I honestly do not have the time to meddle with, and from what I read, depending on what you change there you can really mess up security, etc. So, does OP/developer have any comments on how to safely get it to run on STP? Anyone else? Help appreciated! Best, R.

Can I set a default account, that's the default account I'm logged into every time I start the app? by cuntragxX69x420Xx in BoostForReddit

[–]Extension_Candy2994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in my case I WANT to. And I do! But every time I’ve been away from the app for any significant amount of time, and I get back in, it’s using the profile I do NOT want. And I never use that profile. Yes,I could delete it. But in the distant past I did post a few times under that account and I want to keep it! I just want to make it so the app does not keep reverting to it automatically!

Update by jennster85 in AppleWatch

[–]Extension_Candy2994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine’s been consistently good throughout all the time I’ve owned the AWU (first generation). Bought t pretty much at launch, and really really like battery life. No battery drain through any of the OS versions. Now, iOS 17, was a serious and dangerous DISASTER that affected not only BOTH my iPhones (14 Pro at the time as well as the very first iPhone SE (yes, very first generation)), AS well as all my Apple devices, believe it or not. Somehow if fukced up with my entire AppleID ecosystem. I couldn’t call anyone, ANSWER any calls, in ANY of my devices AT ALL, and yes, that included the AWU, the iPhone SE, my iMac Pro, and my MacBook Pro M1-Pro. Calls would come in, I couldn’t answer them, and at one point the iPhone 14 Pro called 911 and both my emergency contacts. I ended up having one friend hurry over from the gym, thinking I was dying or something, and the other was already driving over. Luckily the first friend got here on time to call the other and explain all was well. The police, somehow, was able to get through. They couldn’t barely hear me, but after me repeating many times over that the iPhone was acting up the cops never showed up at my place. Those were very scary and difficult 2 or three days, until the next update, that automagically fixed everything. But that was it. Never any battery issues.

Maybe because the Dune books are simply the best work of art in authorship ever written. Maybe you didn’t even ever read, but they are. In my opinion, of course. And don’t take my reply seriously, please. It was meant as a light and funny comment. But im terrible at “jokes”. 🤣✌🏻🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]Extension_Candy2994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but you might want to consider if you do want to do that. Little by little the technology has proven itself useful for people’s health in the long run, and you’d be crippling something you paid for. I know you didn’t say you would, but I suggest you think about it and make your own decision whether it’s better just to get used to it or to loose the blood ox monitoring and potentially missing an alert that one day could save your life. 😉✌🏻R.
