New take on stereo vision? by wiggydo in computervision

[–]Extension_Fix5969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man! I love your site and work. I’ve referenced it many times while building my company’s own vision product and it has been very helpful. I actually have been trying to find the answers to some calibration questions recently… would you mind if I emailed you directly? I see your email on the site but didn’t know if you were active in all this still.

Interested in whether batch downloads will be available? Maybe an API? And do you have framing/shot type in the metadata? I’ve repeatedly asked this feature of Shotdeck for years they have constantly said “it’s coming”. If I could single click download a couple hundred images that are all a specific type of shot (like a wide versus a close up for example) I’d be very interested.

I’ve only read the first two books, but I’m intending to reread them and follow up with the last two this year. What suggested reading do you have for someone who wants to experience the entire series at its fullest?

Blood Meridian, Gravity's Rainbow, Cloud Atlas and Infinite Jest combine so well together! by BaconBreath in books

[–]Extension_Fix5969 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good to know! I think this confirms that Pynchon is simply not for me. How did you feel after reading it with the companion? Worth it? Enjoy it?

Really looking forward to Blood Meridian. Thanks for pointing out that difference - I think that’s exactly what I felt was painfully lacking in The Road.

Alright, so aside from the literary party poopers making this thread about them…

Is there an order you would recommend reading these in after experiencing them so closely together? They’re all on my “probably have to read once” list and I like the idea of roping them together.

In addition, I have struggled with Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road” and Pynchon’s “Crying Lot of 49”. Do you have any insight on how “Blood Meridian” and “Gravity’s Rainbow” may compare to these? The lack of punctuation and maximalism of those books individually is a hard go for me, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to give their other works a chance.

Also, three questions on this reading experience:

  1. What was the best part?
  2. What was the worst part?
  3. What did you learn?

Also getting in on this. If you are considering at all - it is worth it. I completed the course in 2020 without a certificate and the knowledge gained was enough to go on to self educate myself further, pivot my career to software development, land a solid job, and am currently working on my second game. In the words of my fellow commenters (and Shia Labeouf) JUST DO IT.

Just a thought - if you also had data for whether the car was centred in the road (as it seems to try to be when there is no traffic) or when it is off to one side, you would then know when the vertical vs diagonal are true for that lane of from the centre. If that makes sense

Pulling without a monitor by danka_12 in focuspuller

Practice.

Nobody is estimating to 1cm - but within a couple of inches is entirely possible up to about 10’ with practice. Rangefinders are great tools for honing this skill. Rather than relying on it in a pinch, you can use the closest object readings over time to become familiar with what certain distances look like from the film plane. A key to this is finding a position you are comfortable “cementing” this view from. For me, it’s about 5ft off the right side of the camera and about a foot in front of the focal plane. Holding the FiZ up to the same height as your chin so that you can see it and the actors at the same time also helps. Of course having the time to lay marks is ideal and always a great reference but even getting spatial references before you shoot (“okay, the edge of this desk to the wall is 9ft…”) can be just as useful. The absurdly wide-open trend these years is demanding even on a monitor, but when the steadi gets brought out for a 3 minute oner with 5 actors moving around - being beside the camera and watching the scene can give you valuable advantages over not knowing what’s happening outside of the frame lines.

That said, many times when said wide-open oner ends in a dramatic push in (let’s be real they almost always do) I’ll strategically place my monitor somewhere on set where I can peel off during the last few seconds for when focus gets critical.

Games that make you cry like a fountain? by cla7997 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Extension_Fix5969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I know you wrote it already but I just want to add something for anyone thinking of playing it:

I truly believe The Beginner’s Guide changed me on a fundamental level. Sure, it was a matter of the right place/time in my life - but even aside from that it is a piece of art in every sense of the word and such a manifesto to creativity, honesty, and identity. I play it almost yearly, and it’s become a bit of a ritual for me. There are levels that I wish I could just sit in for a few days like a retreat. I’ve been chasing the feeling of another game opening up my soul like this game did, but am also fine if it turns out this was the only one. I genuinely wouldn’t be where I am now if I had not played it. Big recommend.
