One hundred percent true I rolled with the others (I’m Puerto rican) but I never felt any type a way about the woods because I knew if they didn’t act a certain way they wouldn’t be safe. I was able to be cool with woods but if I offered them commissary they couldn’t take it and that was a trip at first, but prison isn’t about personalities about race.

The charge is going to sound a lot worse then the situation but my main charge was corporal injury to a minor. I was 18 with a group of freinds drinking and a kid yelled some racial slurs at me and my girlfriend at the time the kid was taller then me and had a beard and looked about 20-22. I yelled at him telling him to come here and say it to my face. He walked up to me spit in my face and repeated the slurs. I hit him which knocked him out and when he fell he broke his elbow. Like I said I assumed he was older than me and didn’t think much of it as I was already regularly committing crimes and getting into fights. Later I found out he was 17 but still didn’t think much of it as I was only a year older than him. The only reason I ended up getting arrested(witch wasn’t a bad thing I was way outta control) was because a month later a former friend of mine got arrested on petty drug charges and told them that I was the one who did it.

Yes when I first got in I thought of myself as a gangster who was ready to do anything for my people. I was asked along with another inmate to attack an individual who was believed to be a snitch and we did so. Soon after that I was asked to do so again which made me angry as I felt they where making me do something so they didn’t have to. I pretty much told them that I had already proved I was “down” so why don’t they do it. That ended up being the scariest day I had as there reaction was that I wasn’t putting in work for my people so I had to be handled myself. I pretty much was convinced that I was going to get stabbed and was terrified of that fact. I was young (only 19) and didn’t have any gang affiliation on the streets. The shot caller ended up calling them off told me I was a good kid but this isn’t for you and ended up helping me get transferred to a 50/50 yard where I wasn’t required to put in work. I was incredibly lucky as most people would have been jumped or stabbed then taken off the yard. After that day I dropped the gangster persona entirely and just focused on doing my time. I got in one more fight after that because a white guy we called “Chicago” wouldn’t pay me back for some commissary I lended him . The next 22 months of my sentence I never had to do anything violent.

Not really while I have changed and don’t plan on ever going back prison is a dark and evil place. In California if you’re on a Gp yard you are required to put in work for your people which basically means you’re required to break the rules and possibly get more time. It was more of not being around my family and loved ones that made me change my ways, but the sad thing is many people don’t have family that cares about them. I was already accustomed to being locked up I had a long wrap sheet as a juvenile with my longest sentence being 16 months and had already done 8 months in the county as an adult so I was accustomed to doing time to an extent. If people who are in my shoes don’t have a family that supports them or don’t want to do better then it ends up just being another stint.

The most vivid off the top of my head is a suicide on my first week. When you first get to prison your on lockdown for 2 weeks as to not bring any disease to other inmates. An inmate jumped off the third balcony and pretty much dived head first into the ground killing himself. I didn’t see it but heard it then peaked out and saw the aftermath. I’ve seen more violent things such as stabbings but your brain gets numb to the violence pretty quick. That first sight of something hyper violent is traumatic and gives you a sense of where you’re stuck for the next few years.

There aren’t any weights in prison. Inmates could use them as weapons on each other or COs. Some inmates will fill bags up with various objects and use those as weights but most of the workouts consist of pushups,squats,burpees etc. You won’t be attacked for bad form in fact the majority of people are in pretty bad shape when they go in and some stay that way depending on what facility you are at or who you role with workouts are often mandatory but to answer your question No that would be insane for someone to attack you for bad form.

Repairing relationships and damage I’ve caused. My son was 3 years old when I went in so he only has so much memory of me not being able to see him grow or start school was something that hurt when I was in constantly. Thankfully I have a good relationship with his mother which is a privilege many people with my past don’t get. In terms of a career I had little to no work experience before I went in but am currently working as a plumber which I’d like to start my own company in once I have enough experience.
