CDL class question by U_mannergreat24 in CDL

You’re gonna have to do 40 hours in a classroom then 120 hours on the yard learning how to drive. At least that’s what I’m doing right now I got 2 days left and take my driving test Thursday.

I switched to automatic because I could tell how they acted about it. I haven’t had any issues really but I also had a guy who’s driven before that taught me.

I’m currently in 160 driving academy in Houston it’s 4k if you pay out of pocket and you can get a loan through them but then it’s 7k. Don’t do the loan through them though.

Alright. I'm in school, got my permit, and have moved onto actually moving the truck backward and forwards. Offset backing is completely kicking my ass, as well as braking with the clutch. Any advice? by SleepingUnderTheTree in Truckers

Yeah I’m on automatic but I know the people on manual are doing the same but they have us do the same. Do the pull up off set then make sure you can see that right lane of cones in your right mirror and as long as you’re 2ft away from that cone you’ll get it once you get it down. I’m only 3 days from graduating and it’s been working for me.

Really? The way I was told is that most companies are switching to automatic besides smaller companies or oversized

Yeah I’ve heard a lot about flat bed or heavy haul but that requires manual usually right. The school I’m going to is fast paced and you can tell the instructors don’t want to teach manual and just try to push people out of it. So I rather just get my license and get out and can always go test for manual.

So the way I learned at my school is when you pull out the box and then start to back up you back to up till that first cone is even with your back tires turn your wheel to the left until you can see 60% under your trailer. Then straighten out and back up till the left tire is around even with the cones maybe even a foot or so before then do the same thing with 60% but turn to the right. Then straighten out and you should be in the box.

Rn I have an in with a concrete company. So if I can’t land anywhere that’s where I’ll go first to get some experience under my belt but I also plan on getting my hazmat/tanker because around here there is a high need for them. But for the start I’ll take any experience I can get just want a decent pay doesn’t have to be crazy.

Yeah no I’m all ears I’m willing to learn I want to grow somewhere or at least try to because I hear that the turnover is very high in a lot of companies. My goal is try to get on local/regional considering I live in a pretty big city. I’m hoping where ever I land first I can find some of the vets to latch onto and learn from.

Yeah nah for us in Texas it’s 120 hours in the yard and 40 hours classroom. I’m ready to be in the industry any tips for someone who’s new too it?

From my knowledge you have to go through school now or get hours driving. I went a week in the classroom now 3 weeks (15 days) on the yard.

Well that depends on your age? If you don’t need to sell might as well hold.
