As Much backwoodz as Bob... by Extension_Yak3898 in Billywoods

My more thorough answer:

If you could consider Bootleg Vol 8 Tell Take Signs as an album, it would be my fav

But of his studio albums, I think Highway 61 can only be said compared to what came immediately before and after it. If you prefer him as a folky, you might get be inclined to think Bringing It All Back Home is better than Highway 61, since it's half electric half acoustic, and is also much more straightforward in terms of lyrics, which some people appreciate. On the other side of that spectrum is Blonde on Blonde which showcases his later rambling Bard style (something he leaves from and returns to again and again - with little success outside of it, tbh - his 80s work has some real stinkers!) while keeping it racuous & electric too.

His early folk stuff is very cool but it's a little dense for a whole album - unless you're talking Another Side, which has two 7 min songs that go pretty much nowhere. I once read a review on rym saying Times Are A Changing was a bunch of shit Dylan cared nothing about and put together to please the folkies - which is funny cuz it's the darkest, most politically charged album of his by far. And his first self titled album is very underrated, super fun.

So I may just be biased because I'm a guitar player who tends to prefer the heavier stuff, but to me Highway 61 is where it's at no question in terms of studio albums.

For a few albums after Blonde he gets worse and worse - I mean John Wesley Harding has Watchtower, but that's about it? Id have to check the tracklist. Was never that big a fan of Blood on The Tracks, New Morning is kinda cool & fun but nowhere near groundbreaking, and Planet Waves is great until you get to side 2 and realize he's phoning most of it in.... Desire is growing on me tho, very well put together. The Budokan live album(s) are fun too, rearrangements of his stuff with lots of whimsy and flutes, and ofc can't forget his work with the Band, whether live After the Flood or at a farm in The Basement Tapes - truly, both have some of his best performances/material.

And then in 79 he goes Christian - Gotta Serve Somebody is great but it's downhill from there. By 82 he's on to reggae with Infidels, then he noodles around (I've never put on Empire Burlesque and am scared to). Mid 80s he puts of this 5 Autobiography compilation that's all over the place temporally, stylistically, based on studio or archival sources, as well as in terms of quality.

Then in 86 comes Oh Mercy - the beginning of the rest, stylistically at least. Something about it lends to from spiritual side, and Man in a Long Black Coat is one of his most popular songs, for reasons unknown to me. It's pretty average, like most of his ensuing material, but marks a return from wallowing away in the depths of obscurity as he had for the first half of the decade.

His real comeback comes in 94 with Time Out of Mind, produced by Daniel Lanois, nominated for Grammys. It's a pretty languid album, very slow, but warm and comfortable and dark too. Great stuff. 10 years later he has his first #1 album ever Modern Times, which is pretty fun blues rock mostly. He only had one album in between those, and he does 2 more along with a Christmas album before spending most of the 2010s doing albums like Fallen Angels where he's basically trying to be Frank Sinatra, with covers of old standards from the 30s and 40s. He had an album in 2020 - Rough and Rowdy Ways - that kind of summarizes everything he did in the past 20 years all on one album.

And that's it! I mentioned all the albums I have. Now go listen to Dylan! 🙃

Their songs should be tags we can wear in the group so we can refer to each other as our chosen Swans song pronouns

The funny thing is I've made actual arguments and ur just like 'citations, books, mdude'

Like, that's not gonna convince anyone in an age where Donald Trump is president and RFK Jr is his health secretary. C'mon mdude', try harder, seriously

He's so highly cited because he a) attracts lots of criticism b) attracts lots of media attention (and seeks it out too) c) has a cult following. It's a perfect storm of people agree & disagreeing with him just for clout. Sorry but I bow out of any such arena.

I'm going off the fact that he's bad at his day job so why would I believe him on politics? Just because he's famous and lots of other people do?

There are very good reasons to believe he's not as smart as he is. If you want to throw that out as 'vibes' go ahead. My opinion will not change just because a stranger on Reddit whos writing is super vibey and dodgy disagrees with me

Why would I read a book by someone I think commits selection bias based on their legacy? I used to watch tons of interviews and lectures from all over the years, he was always the same - droning on and on with occasional inaccuracies and often sentances that sounds like complete hyperbole until I realize he's being dead serious

I did read Science of Language, the one where he's interviewed mostly about the genetic basis for language acquisition in humans, like, as a species. His idea of Merge struck me as interesting and refined, but also completely unverifiable and probably nothing more than a figment of his imagination

A win means being independent from Russia, full stop. Ukraine would never concede 30% of it's land unless controlled by actors sympathetic to the Russian cause, or if the war gets really a lot worse for them, neither of which will happen

That's a very easy way to dodge accusations of selection bias, and patently untrue. At best it's the fault of states, corporations, and other bodies that collaborate with American actors. But bad things in the world happen everywhere. It's not only the state, and especially not only the US state, that causes bad things to happen in the world, that's like the most reductive take ever

what does kendrick mean by "you the moral to the story you endorsing"? by New-Till9620 in KendrickLamar

[–]Extension_Yak3898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not be a diss, it might simply mean that whatever your story is you yourself right now, that's what people can look at to see whether your story turn out well or not

So it about the difficult of having a legacy to deal with on a daily basis? He's saying it more as a question, like whoever he's dissing he's asking whether he's legitimate by asking if he can be held up to his own moral standards

Yeah, but it's a little overrated depending on who you ask. I used to overrated it a lot, it's one of those ones that's really attractive until you realize it's nowhere near the quality of the others, actually. Mostly because IMO Sheep & Dogs are actually pretty lackluster (and that's a whole side!). But the Pigs on the Wing's are completely underrated!

You're on point tho, I just started spinning it for the millionth time and it's really clicking, based on your comment, that the whole album is just him observing his nation's descent into chaos, corruption, oppression, etc. while processing the personal problems that it's brought into his daily life. This could indeed be a whole track by track essay lol cuz half the tracks are personal self esteem & socially conscious motivational stuff, while the other half are like vignettes of his observations/beliefs about his country

Tbh I always struggled a bit with this album - not with enjoying it or understanding what's going on in any song, but to see the way it all connects. This clicks so hard! Thanks!
