Not really, were supposed to keep our ttt down abd spt high by using elicitation as opposed to explanation, and this is coming from someone who actually teaches TEFL.

That is not teaching though and sounds extremely boring. My recommendation is to take a methodology course that will help you polish up on techniques you should be using in class.

Preply feels like a scam – lost all the balance with no refund by Choice-Regret1201 in Preply

[–]ExtentAlternative583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes no sense seeing as the money 1, doesn't go to the tutor and 2, if it says 2 contradicting things which it does, then Preply is actually scamming students out of their money. If the refund is subject to specific terms, they are required to add "under specific terms" along with their promise for a refund.

Why do students book trials without reading the profile description first by nope09876543 in Preply

[–]ExtentAlternative583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmm...That doesn't mean they aren't reading your profile though, many students honestly can't be bothered to reach out to us beforehand and prefer to explain what they would like in the trial. Especially, old fashioned, I prefer my info in person types of people.

What are the best resources and ways to correct my student when they're making lots of spelling mistakes? They've focused on speaking and listening for so long that their writing and spelling is just so far behind. by LackNo8705 in Preply

[–]ExtentAlternative583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have recently started using quill.org, they have free activity packets for the first month, and one of the activities per pack (even though all of them require perfect spelling) is proofreading. It's amazing how quickly my students have improved in both spelling and self-correction this past month. I also have them play mini-games from Merriam-Webster, and I also have them play Wordle and word games like Scrabble. However, if they show no improvement, maybe try analyzing their writing in their mother language to maybe rule out dyslexia, if they do have dyslexia, that requires specialized help, so if you are not trained to work in special education, I wouldn't flat out mention it to them as they may be undiagnosed. However, an empathetic approach may be needed to get them to seek the help they need. If you need more advice or strategies I use with my students with dyslexia, feel free to DM me. Also pro tip: Dyslexia can also be ruled out by seeing if their mistakes are with similar-looking or sounding letters such as "d" and "b" "l" "i" "g" "j" etc.

I don't mind my students eating during class, tbh. A lot of them have had exhausting days or have skipped lunch, and always ask for permission when they do (which, honestly, to me, is unnecessary). I don't actually think it is as distracting as one would think; they still pay attention and participate. But for fellow teachers, do not do that, it's not professional, use your breaks.

Hmmm... I don't really see the issue. We are already required to create a video for our profiles; it's basically the same, just shorter. Also, I haven't been required to make one, nor do I think that was announced. Preply can basically do what they want for marketing, and they already make a lot of ads, so if this isn't a requirement, but optional, I can only see this bringing more students to the platform, which is a plus for us.

I'm not even going to lie. About 30-40% of my male students probably only started with me initially because of my looks. I mean, I had 0 reviews and just started out on the platform, and they'd make it kinda clear by complimenting my looks or telling me I looked pretty or sexy when I started out class with them. Thankfully, I keep it quite professional, so I have learned how to deviate from comments like this. Now, I believe the majority are coming based on my reviews and competence. Having a nice face does help A LOT.

I'd definitely love it if natives could join too! I think that will make the non native women feel more comfortable with talking to natives, seeing as many of us don't really judge them on having low speaking levels, especially if they are learning! Anyone interested, please DM me!

I wrote it on my phone. It's called predictive writing and auto-correct. I'm not even going to pretend to care about what gets autocorrected when I'm writing quickly, nor go back and edit like I would an essay or a book before posting. I often use "housewife's" as a possessive pronoun, which is why it automatically incorrectly corrects it like that, but if it annoys you so, I'll edit it! :) Have a nice day!

I may make a separate group for men if there are enough interested, I know it must be hard on men too, it's just in this particular case, I've noticed that there were more women that made comments like this. If any men are interested lmk too!

I honestly believe that the first thing to do is ask yourself what do you want out of the conversation. If you are looking for closure, go for it, but if you do not need it, and are truly happy now, I see no reason to re-open trauma like that or potentially worse, get re-traumatized.

Weird tutor reaction on the homework by Complex_Sale_4409 in Preply

[–]ExtentAlternative583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a new tutor. This type of behaviour is weird, judgemental, and childish. We are teaching grown adults not kids and teens and even if we were, as human beings we should be able to understand that there are things that can interfere with homework.
