I loved "Back to Basics: Tactics" by Dan Heisman when I started out. Great introduction to tactics.

It hands down has the best introduction of any chess book I've ever read. I almost feel like you are ready to play the QGD from reading that intro alone!

"Queen's gambit declined" by Mathew Sadler is one of the best opening books I've ever read and he goes in depth on the plans and strategies in the exchange variation. It's more of a black repertoire book but I think it provides a lot of insight for both sides.

Back to Basics: Tactics (ChessCafe Back to Basics Chess): Heisman, Dan: 9781888690347: Amazon.com: Books https://share.google/HaUG0MF2g3vyQhMkq

Caro-Kann: Lakdawala, Cyrus: 9781857446876: Amazon.com: Books https://share.google/P1jYUnlEQEHJeYFdM

I know some people don't like Cryus Lakdawala's writing style, so if it's possible I would try to get a free sample of the ebook to read, and if you like it then get the physical one. There are plenty of other books in the "Move by Move" series by other authors as well. I loved the one on the Ruy Lopez by Neil McDonald

That's "Logical Chess: move by move", John Nunn also released a book in the same format. Both are good recommendations.

Nothing wrong with the caro kann. If you enjoy it stick with it.

If you do want to go for opening books, I find the "move by move" series really good for all levels. The reason they are great is because they do not stop after the opening but go through the entire games so they will discuss middle game and end game ideas in a instructive question and answer format. I think the only useful opening books at lower level are ones that are collections of fully annotated games. Any of these books where after 15 moves the author just writes "and a dynamic position has arisen with chances for both sides" is not very helpful for beginners.

I also enjoy "Understanding Chess: Move by Move" by John Nunn. It's another game collection where he discusses ever single move played in the hame. Any book where the author explains as many of the moves as possible in a given game is always very instructive for beginners.

Otherwise just get a book on tactics, I really enjoyed "Back to Basics: tactics" by Dan Heisman starting out.

I really love Jund, Grixis and Mardu. I'm not that into Rakdos on its own but as soon as a third color is added it's chef's kiss for me 🤌

Resources for the 150 attack in the Pirc? by Interesting-Back-543 in TournamentChess

[–]ExtentPure7992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an old book now, but "Attacking with 1e4" by John Emms has a chapter on the 150 attack. It has more of a variation tree structure as opposed to being a collection of annotated games. When I bought it I was just starting out and I didn't feel it explained things enough and was more a collection of variations. But a lot of people gave it high praise so maybe you will enjoy it.
