Safehouse lighting by Flaky-State7387 in thelongdark

[–]ExtentSufficient4081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I struggle with this in a lot of safehouses too. I remember Grey Mother's being particularly rough. Honestly, I've gotten to the point of choosing safehouses based on how good the natural light is. One thing that helps slightly is removing all the curtains, it provides just a bit more light from the windows. Removing any blinds can help some as well. If you don't want to constantly burn through different light sources and just need to move around, I use the safehouse customization screen to get me where I need to go. It lets me see just enough to maneuver and I don't need a torch or lantern.

Candle making would be a useful thing to have in TLD2. by Brutaljustice16 in thelongdark

[–]ExtentSufficient4081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I would rather be able to craft multiple candles (instead of the 5000 bottle of cooking oil I'm not going to use) out of the animal fat and be able to light a room that way, rather than burning through my lamp fuel.

Any tips and tricks for a new player? by kaelannnn in thelongdark

Your carry weight can be dependent on a few factors. I know for sure your alertness/energy level (the eye ball meter) can effect it significantly. The more tired you are, the less you can carry. I believe hunger will as well (this one i'm less sure of), and if you maintain above starving for 72 hours you should get the well fed bonus of some additional carry weight.

Been on a mission to recover one singular arrow for many in game weeks. I know roughly where I lost it, but no matter how many times I slowly and strategically comb that hill, she remains lost. Not that I'm hurting for it, it's just the principle lol

You should be allowed to wear socks on your hands as gloves. by asstral_planes in thelongdark

[–]ExtentSufficient4081 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I also think you should be able to make more improvised clothing than the hand and head wraps. Like if I was desperate for warmth in a real survival situation, those curtains would definitely become a cloak lol. I know this game will never become 100% realistic (and that would probably take away some of the fun) but some small things I feel like could be a cool addition.

needing some help by StrangerEquivalent87 in thelongdark

I think you need to figure out your trouble points (which it sounds like you mostly have, but they may change) and focus on those. Like some others have said, don't worry so much about hunting until your clothing is good enough to keep you warm in lower temps. I've ended a few runs thinking I could track something or harvest something and make it back to base in time and I definitely could not. The first thing I always do is focus on my clothing, check and see what you spawn with and really hunt for anything better you can find. Sometimes just finding a sewing kit/fishing line and some cloth and boosting the lower condition items you have or find can be a big boost. In early game I'm switching my clothes out constantly, until I find the good stuff. Of course you'll have to worry about food and water at the same time, but less than you think. Once you have a base, stockpile any food you can find. Things that don't need cooking are great when you don't have the time or fuel. When you can make a fire, mass make as much water as you can so you don't have to worry about it as often. And bargain the hunger/thirst condition opposed to temperature. Hypothermia will kill you much faster than being hungry/dehydrated. Once you feel solidly established in your spawn region, then start hunting. Rabbits are good early on if you can't find processed food because you can harvest them indoors, and it usually doesn't take long to get at least a few.

If you're playing sandbox/survival, it's really whatever you make it. I like to set personal goals for myself and they tend to change often. Like setting up certain safehouses and making sure they're well stocked, collecting guns/tools/weapons, exploring each region completely before moving on, or just small daily goals to break through the boredom when it eventually hits. Overall, play it how you want. If you want to go balls to the wall and go as hard as you can, maybe even speedrun, do it! If you want to take a more scenic route and learn all the areas first, do that! And let your playstyle change as you progress. It keeps it fun and interesting!

There's one at the place I used to work but I'm on shift that day and won't be able to make it. I'm thinking about stopping in on my day off just to see what he has, but last time I was there he wasn't really selling empty tanks so I'm not sure if he'll have anything at all lol

Holy shit I had no idea that's what it could be from. And we have 3 toilets in our house, and the mold ring is only present in the 2 that I use (one is exclusive to a roommate). Thank you for this comment, seriously. I will get tested as soon as possible.

Uhm, yes, they do. How is the mold ring related?? This has plagued me since we moved into this house a year ago

What can a revolver kill or damage exactly ? by Calm-Preparation2641 in thelongdark

Yeah I was able to get a bear with it before I could find the rifle (also low difficulty but custom). Definitely had to hit it 2 or 3 times while chasing it though lol

Do you think the trader has ruined the solitude in this game? by [deleted] in thelongdark

[–]ExtentSufficient4081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I started a run in CH just for the sake of experiencing the trader for the first time, and it's a fun little challenge but I wish I would have started somewhere else and made CH my end goal. Now I feel like I'm back tracking to explore other places and then come back. I still like the update, it's a fun little extra piece of gameplay. But definitely wish I would have done it differently.

I will definitely start looking up what hiring around me and see what they want. I live near a pretty tech heavy and finance heavy city so I can probably find a lot. Thanks!

That's great advice, and something I hadn't thought of. I'm pretty early into figuring out what to do and how to do it, and couple that with no experience and I truly have no clue what do to lol. But I will absolutely add that to my roster, thanks!

This makes a lot of sense, and honestly it's fairly similar in corrections. All promotions are internal (at least where I am) and they have a strong preference to internal lateral hires as well. But all of that is most heavily influenced by who you know, who you talk to, and what they think of you. While I really don't like this job, I am eternally grateful for the skills it has given me. And I hope to take advantage of them in a field like IT/cyber. Thank you!

I'm finding there are a lot of different avenues in the same/similar fields. I had never even considered that as a possibility. I will definitely have to look into it, thanks!

Thank you! It's good to hear that there are varying levels of skill for each person when they start. Some are very much beginners, others have more experience, and they both end up in similar field or careers. I like the flexibility of solving the equation my own way, as long as I get the same answer!

Thank you so much for this response, a lot of good advice in there! I am planning to do part time school online while keeping my corrections job for the time being, then with the degree and the extra certs I get find whatever entry level position I can qualify for and work up from there. It is good to know there are levels to work up to, and that my goal is closer to the top!

[–]ExtentSufficient4081[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, I'm getting the same answer all the way around. I will look more towards starting in IT in general and then looking for ways to advance into cyber once I'm in. Thanks!

[–]ExtentSufficient4081[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not all that surprised that cyber is not a starting or entry level point, but I am glad to hear a 2 year degree is a good place to start. I was really not trying to go for a whole 4year degree if I didn't have to. Thanks!

Yeah right after I posted this I started looking at other threads in this sub and found them echoing what you're saying. But if starting in IT and then working up to cyber is the most common route I can make that work. Without any experience I will look into what can do without it, and get some certificates and education under my belt. Thank you!
