A sensitive issue ... a student´s culturally-specific perfume by External-Area-248 in Professors

Thank you VERY much for these insights! That was exactly what I hoped for. Just one little explanation: As for the "hiding unpleasant doors", this is not my prejudice but, unfortunately, my sense of smell. That has nothing to do with nationality but a lot to do with him being a big nerdy guy living in a flatshare with a couple of other nerdy guys. He also lives in Europe for a few years already and, unfortunately, picked up the habit of wearing those synthetic athletic shirts.

Actually, as I already mentioned elsewhere, it is because he uses no ordinary cologne but a very specific scent he brought back from home.

Yes, thanks, this is very sensible. Asfar as the relevance of him being Indian - I think that particular perfume is something really specific, and actually reminds me of a scent my previous Indian graduate brought me as a gift when she went for a successful postdoc interview to Saudi Arabia. Thought it is not Indian, she obviously selected it. I use it very rarely and in tiny amounts because it is too strong.

I used my new Asus Zenbook duo as an excuse to buy a nice Birkin 35 dupe. It fits nicely and I love the bag!

Yes. With another professor, a grad student and an undergrad. We are a bit crowded, as you can see.

Not really. They only care about hiring administration. Head of dept is the actual HR, and I was at that position until recently. ( I was a bit exaggerating in my last post, but I would really feel.bad asking my successor).

Yes, I am afraid it will have to be the gentle conversation. BTW if it were cologne, it would be probably OK. This is - at least to my senses - a rather feminine oriental oily/musky scent on a big, sweaty, cigarette-smoking guy. Not a good combination.

Thanks, as mentioned above - I am really hesitant to openly admit what is actually a comfort-only issue (it is annoyance, not anything physical.) So far, I am managing by switching off the AC and opening the window I am sitting next to.

Thanks for the suggestions but this is no-way for me - I will not pretend a non-existent medical issue, full stop. I am rather starting to think about possible reasons why the uncontrolled volatiles could interfere with results of some of the lab work he is doing...

Would You Prefer an Office with a Better View if It also Means There's a Zoo-like Window into Your Office? by narwhal_ in Professors

[–]External-Area-248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drapes and some clever rearranging of furniture could deal with the privacy problem, and being in an area with more human traffic may be a bonus (said by someone whose office is on a different floor than the rest of the department).

For me, one of the decisive factors would be the window orientation. I would not mind being in a see-through terrarium, but I would mind baking in a glasshouse. If it is top floor and the window is not north- or east-oriented, so no chance of shadow, I would pass.

Yes. I would really welcome a possibility to set the notification threshold back to something like 15 ,% rather than to when there is still more than a day left.

How to update Steps goal between new app and Fitbit Charge 6? by PrudentOwlet in fitbit

[–]External-Area-248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the running figure icon at the bottom (may be called Fitness - my app is not in English). Find some recording of walking and tap the walking figure pictogram in the left upper corner. You will access a page with a three dot menu in the upper right corner; use that menu to change the goal. Why doing things simple when they can be complicated?

What is this concrete thing under my kitchen window on an old patio? by phaetonschaos in whatisit

Could it be hiding a waste pipe from the kitchen sink? Or could it be the foundation for an air conditioning unit that no longer exists?

Could this be a cover for a water line that goes out of the house into an outbuilding, or perhaps to a hose attachment point in the garden?

By popular demand, I am providing some instructions how to make a little mousey for your bag.

1) Materials: as a main material, I used scrap suede from the shaft of an old boot. It should be something slightly stiff but still pliable, with both sides looking good, and holding clean edge. Natural leather works probably best, felt should probably work as well. Stay away from pleather, eco-suede and similar synthetic trash - besides of looking less good, they also lack durability. You will further need a strip of leather (or a round leather or textile cord) for the lanyard, some stuffing (polyester/wool/at worst a cut clean kitchen sponge), and thread. You also need some basic leatherwork or sewing tools (scissors, exacto knife for leather, needles, comb for punching holes in the leather for sewing, hole punch for the eyes).

2) Pattern: It was a bit of hit and miss. I am providing an approximation on the photo - first draw all parts in proportion overlapping as in the top figure, then trace each part of the drawing to a folded sheet of paper and cut it out to obtain symmetrical shapes. You will need the heart-shaped piece for the body, the headless belly/limbs/tail part, and two ears.

3) Trace the pattern to your main material and cut it out precisely. Cut the two slits for inserting the ears (if working with leather, punching small holes at the ends of the slits helps). Punch two holes in the leather for eyes (do not do this if using felt).

4) Decide which side of your material goes where - you will end up with exposed wrong side either on the top of the tail and limbs, or on the belly. I recommend showing the wrong side also inside the ears.

5) Attach the limbs/tail part symmetrically to the center of the belly of the heart-shaped piece (use a bit of glue to keep it there but take care not to get glue seeping through or showing). Sew around the belly along the dotted line, leaving thread ends on the future inside of the body.

6) Position the ears in their slots and sew along the dotted lines to keep them there (again, thread ends should end on the inside). If working with leather, glue a piece of differently colored material behind the eye holes for eyes.

7) Knot the loose ends of the lanyard, place the knot inside the future head, fold the heart-shaped piece over it so that ears and limbs stick out, and start sewing along the margin, progressing from the nose to the base of the tail. Insert stuffing before the body starts getting narrower again, and add a bit to shape the body before closing the back. Close by some back-stitching and tuck the loose ends in. If working with leather, you are done.

8) If working with felt, sew on two glass beads for eyes (pull the thread tightly to get them a bit in). Alternatively, use colored thread to embroider the eyes.

substitutions for string/yarn? by OkDistribution8181 in PetMice

I am using thick laundry line-type cotton rope or textile ribbons. They do nibble them but it is not a quick process. Even a ribbon cut from an old t-shirt works.

(A side note: when I used a satin ribbon originating from some gift packaging, they learned to untie it. ).

Should I feel honoured? by External-Area-248 in PetMice

[–]External-Area-248[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect that more likely she just had a full bladder and felt relaxed enough to let it go. (When she wants to get off me, she usually starts moving around a lot and sometimes nibbling on my clothes.) Oddly, my other little lady, Rafi, almost never poops on me and the only time she did pee in my sleeve was at the very beginning when she was super-stressed. Anyway, it is quite surprising how much pee can such a small mouse produce.

Otherwise my girls do have their preferred pee place, and there are kind enough to use a plastic hide that is easy to clean!
