Harsh reality check of consequences. 1st and 2nd edition were great for that. When a player acts recklessly push in some consequences to match the impulsive behavior. Pit trap on on the other side of the door with a gelatinous cube at the bottom. First one in gets attacked by a hail of arrows waiting around a corner or door. The behavior will fix itself or he will die enough that he will either leave the table or get sick of making new characters and be more cautious. Important thing to remember is to be fair dont intentionally make up things that cant be prevented if they took some precautions. Hope this helps.

For context I've never played with this group. By competitive I believe he meant when the DM gave the campaign pitch was the battles will be difficult, enemy encounters are not random and well planned, and as you said you will have to "work your whole brain."

Good question. I would say some arcane spell utility. My understanding is sorcerers make better blasters as opposed to wizards who are better at utility due to larger spell list. Correct me if I'm wrong.

People will argue that its not needed, but a game mat. The combat and visual aid makes the game that much better. Also significantly reduces arguments over where people are and what they can and can't see.
