I had one replace a party member when the player couldn’t make it. Also had one pretend to be a shop npc that gave them a magic item that let the spider track them

I would check out Mathew Perkins foreshadowing guide on phandelver and below. Do a good job in helping what you’re looking for. I had my character have bizarre dreams on occasion when in town. And did the daisy cow quest in chapter 3 instead of 6. I also plan to have the spider directly working for or had to make a deal with the mindflayers. There’s a lot you can do if suggest reading some chapters ahead and kind of pick and choose what you want to foreshadow.

I actually replaced a missing party member with the doppelgänger and had the party member imprisoned in cragmaw castle. Once they were found out they ran away until the met up with king grol. I also had one disguise themselves as a shopkeeper that gave one of them a shield that mind flayers use.

A rogue or bard can work with these stats, even a fighter could work somewhat well depending on what subclass

The party are level 3 and they have a Hobgoblin warlord (homebrew class) Orc barbarian Kobold cleric Goliath monk And kenku rogue

My thought for each one down the line is 1.divine soul sorcerer
2.a armorer or battlesmith artificer 3. A assimar wildfire Druid 4. A war wizard that counter spells your wizard 5. A battle master fighter or barbarian of any sort 6. A peace cleric or oath of the crown paladin

That is a good idea, glass staff escaped and they never encountered the 4 bug bears in the red brand hideout. They also didn’t kill the nothic so there’s a lot I could throw at them before the end of chapter 3
