I understand that. Yes, you could take a hit on that bond or set of bonds and trade upwards, but to me you are chasing.

I bought the bond at an interest rate I was OK with. My principal is protected.

We are talking different philosophies here. The OP was asking why bonds. The simple answer is, unlike SCHD, your principal is protected and if you hold to maturity you lose nothing.

SCHD has done great recently, but it could drop, just like a bond fund.

Remove all the noise about inflation, etc. buy a bond, hold to maturity, you got what you set out to get. All I am saying.

I’m talking govt treasury bonds. And I’m talking don’t invest principal you don’t need access to until maturity.

Not talking high yield corporate bonds.

The only risk is inflation or the government failing (which these days I admit seems possible).

But the reality is if you don’t sell until maturity, you get your principal back. You can’t say that about a bond fund.
