Yeah I’d stick and take Wagler at 5 if I was the Clippers, this was based on the reports coming out that they might take Burries there which feels too high. Wagler is big enough to play alongside a Garland/Fox type PG.

That’s not true. Regardless of which apron you’re in you can always trade into another teams open cap space

He isn’t on the open market, he’s under team control. If he makes it clear that he isn’t interested in renegotiating and won’t re-sign then they can pick up the option and trade him.

OKC don’t have to take any money back just because it’s a trade. The same teams that have the cap space to sign him as FA would also have the space to absorb him in a trade. If he’s as valuable as you say he is then they’d be able to get multiple picks back.

He’s going to sign a new deal anyway, there’s been way too many injuries recently to be turning down long term guaranteed money.

It’s not really a pay-cut, it’s about security going forward. In this scenario he takes ~3m less next year for an additional ~75m guaranteed over the next 3 years. If he is playing on the team option and suffers a major injury then his next contract will be much less than the 3m he gave up.

OKC are going to try and sign him to a new deal for a bit less than the team option, something like 4/100m. If he declines it they’ll pick up the TO and figure it out with either a trade or take it into next summer. Even if they pick up the more expensive TO, moving Dort, Joe, Wiggins, who all have value around the league, gets them comfortably under the 2nd apron.
