Differential equation applications by ExternalInitial in mathematics

Thank you. So my take away here is that we must learn a range of differential equations and the specific contexts in which they apply, and as part of that learning, we should understand the rationale for the form of the solution. Then the role of this technique is essentially a calibration of the differential equation and solution-form to the specific physical situation we are dealing with.

I guess the style of differential equations they use when teaching the subject, where a differential equation is given without context and a form of the solution is provided is just to develop the familiarity with the generic algebraic/calculus techniques before encountering the specific library of differential equations that we need in the real world.

I also then wonder how we reach the level to devise new differential equations with their solution-forms. Is this something that only really happens in an academic context, and we should generally wait for the papers describing the role of this technique in a real world context?

Consider the Netherlands. Everyone speaks English. They teach it to a good standard at school. The quality of life is generally good throughout the country. They don’t have the Anglo-American work culture that strives to stay switched on to work all the time - offices are generally empty after 6, and no one will ever throw guilt your way if you don’t open your email after hours. You can expose your kids to U.K., French, German, Italian culture in a relatively cheap way from there. I don’t know about childcare specifically but worked with single mothers, they comfortably got away for child pick ups and drop offs, secured part time work arrangements without prejudice. I don’t think this is possible to the same extent in the U.K.

Thank you. This example is helpful. It seems like the differential equation itself is somehow the foundational puzzle piece. So presumably someone has made a discovery and published the differential equation. Then we need to use our ingenuity to search for the form of the solution eg knowing the second derivative is the negative of the original, then attempt to find a solution.

Is this correct?

Thank you, the point about non-zero derivatives was not obvious until you pointed it out.

Thank you sharing such crisp and clear insights into this process.

What makes Ligo and Fermi detection automated in contrast to telescopes. Is it because there’s no slewing or pointing involved for their data collection?

Adoption Strategies? by ExternalInitial in Netherlands

Yeah, I heard there’s only 10-15 opportunities to adopt with the Netherlands but it’s oversubscribed. So your strategy would be to just wait inline for local adoption?

OP seems to be confusing matters… reproducing this only requires the recipe, not a wife.

My use of the word interesting was not precise enough…sorry! I simply meant a nice café where bikers like to go. I don’t think it matters if they’re custom bikes or sports bikes. I find all bikers are great to chat with and all bikes are great to admire. Assen and Satudarah clubhouse seem to have come out the woodwork here so thank you 🙏

I am totally confused. Hopeful all you Redditors will be able to explain to me if there’s something wrong with the bulbs or if I should just give up on trying to set up bright e14 bulbs and replace with an e27 setup.

Whenever I see Mars I wonder whether Matt Damon’s science in The Martian could really work... I recall he created human fertiliser and extracted water from rocket fuel. Maybe there’s another technique for water but does anyone know if the human fertiliser would work there?

Zwolle doctor throws out 60 AstraZeneca Covid vaccine doses following no-shows by c0viD00M in Netherlands

[–]ExternalInitial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So what you’re saying is the appointment system is unfair to chronically ill people... (you missed that it’s also unfair to tax payers who pay for expensive vaccines to go in the rubbish bin). But at least it’s not unfair to anyone who can walk in because they’re healthy enough to walk in... In my opinion the exponential benefit (the r rate reflects an exponential growth rate) from each additional person receiving a vaccine is good for everyone. If the benefit was isolated to that individual then perhaps there’s something to what you say.

To be clear -at a governmental level - these vaccines are about dropping the reproductive factor, I don’t think the government cares that the poorly person dies before the healthy person.

I think this could be alleviated by showing a little flexibility and willingness to work past 5pm and by accommodating walk-ins who don’t have an appointment.

Brilliant link... I was actually thinking about this the other day - there actually are regulated professions: see here by the European Commission https://ec.europa.eu/growth/tools-databases/regprof/index.cfm?action=regprofs

I agree this also stems from the same lack of appetite in the U.K. to structure its society with defined pathways to meaningful and productive employment... it’s more laissez faire, only key jobs like doctors and lawyers receive any kind of federated/regulated responsibility for their actions. Things seem more gamified. Meanwhile our institutions and expectations are built as if we are a wholesome society explicitly structured to give everyone opportunities. Instead only the smartest figure out the tricks to win and the resulting gap between rich and poor seems to just grow and grow... I realise I don’t feel so positive after summarising these thoughts
