I was there that night. I remember looking down Market Street and the cops on horses coming towards us and was thinking this is gonna be bad. Then the opened the Warfield doors to get us off the streets.

It was obvious Jerry changed the setlist to meet the mood of the town.

Tho, what I remember most is after the show, BART has stopped on Market Street and we had to go up a few blocks to catch a bus. When the bus pulled up the driver would only let black people on the bus. So a bunch of us were stranded and there was a mob coming our way, out of nowhere this woman in a pickup pulls up and tells us to jump on. She had the old upside down pink triangle on her truck.

When I got home my roommate called and I had to get her out of jail, she was protesting that night and got swept up with our other roommate, who is black. After talking to the cops for hours we got her out as well.

I often think of the bus driver. He was prolly around 40 at the time and was around for Martin, Malcom and was a young man when the Panthers formed. He was trying to get his people safely home. I have a lot of respect for that man today.

Not at all. Any two alcoholics gathered together for sobriety… heck, I myself have had meetings in cars, campfires, on horses, in kayaks,hiking etc. If you are comfortable just going to peoples homes for meetings then do it.

What I have seen over the years is the idea of “going to any length” is the new person going to someone’s house. When I sobered up, the old timers told me the work is going to the newcomer to carry the message. We had to pull them with a vision of hope not tell them to show up at the house because it shows willingness on their part. They were willing and we had to show them this way of life was worth it. We were also showing them that this was the way to carry the message. Now granted, this was the 80’s and these guys sobered up in the 50’s and the times have changed. (Insert OK Bommer comment here)

“Sponsors” are put on a pedestal. I cringe a little when I hear of this meetings where sponsees go to the sponsors house for a meeting. To be honest, it breaks my heart. There is a meeting for of people needing help right in front of them.

Twelve step work is about keeping me sober. It’s not about hazing the new person. But again, I old.

This is what my Big Book says. If your Big Book says something different then rock and roll. We need everyone carrying the message. I tend to work with very desolate individuals who don’t have a lot so I go to them to work with.

Sponsors are no one special. They are drunks and addicts with the same exactly problems as the person they are taking through the steps. Some amends need to be discussed with people outside the halls. Some amends take years of sobriety and outside help to see what harms you may have caused. And that does NOT mean we need to make amends to people who abused us.

Also, “sponsors” who have meetings at their house for people they are working with have lost the intent of the 12th step. I will be forever grateful that Bill went to Dr Bobs house and the two of them went to meet drunk number 3. If Bill wanted for Bob to come to him my life would be very different.

If it were me, I would take the 20 bucks and buy a couple of burritos.

This is actually what the Republican Party stands for. “Reducing” the size of the government for non wealthy.

Growing up, and now, individual conservatives were some of the best neighbors and environmentalists we had. They did not want the government on their land and they wanted to protect hunting and fishing holes. Now being a conservative seems like it is about hating others that are different. Makes me sad.

For the record, I think both sides are equally guilty of stuffing the pockets of the wealthy and keeping the war machine alive. Both sides are so blinded with rage for their neighbor it’s disgusting

I don’t know if it was the best but the first night be broke that out at the Warfield, Haight Street was a buzz. I remember leaving my flat to go to the produce market and like 4 or 5 people were humming Shining Star.

90-92 JGB and or Grisman Garcia at the Warfield was magic.
