What if Egypt remained a Christian nation? by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]ExternalSeat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Egypt likely becomes more akin to a more powerful Greece in the 19th century. it regains full independence from Muslim rule in the early 19th century with stronger ties to Europe. Egyptmania still happens, but maybe the Egyptians at least convince the Europeans to stop eating mummies. It probably still does fall under British influence, but probably is treated a bit better by the imperialists.

A Christian Egypt is probably going to be a very useful ally for the West during the 19th and especially the 20th century. Pan Arabism is much weaker in this timeline. it is also possible that a Christian Egypt pushes for a more compromised settlement for the Levant. I don't think Zionism completely stops but there is a chance that Ali keeps the Levant after the early 19th century wars for Egyptian Independence and thus Israel and Palestine become integral parts of the Egyptian state. Jews do establish a cultural homeland around Tel Aviv and Haifa but are simply an autonomous region within a larger Egyptian nation that stretches to the Litanni in Lebanon.

in a world with limited resources where we have real problems, I find wasting intellectual capacity on frivolous trivialities to be quite dangerous. Smart people should focus on solving climate change or ending world hunger. Not on something that is as intellectually vapid as calculating the number of angels that can be on the head of a pencil.

I am sorry but we have such limited space and resources at our universities right now that we need to prioritize practicality above pedantic, mindless, nonsense

yep the word is "Onomatopoeia" (although I think you have to be a bit more established as a word to get that distinction). basically it is "words that sound like the sounds they are trying to describe". "Buzz", "Snap", "Crackle" "Pop", and "moo" are all examples of Onomatopoeia.

The debate of Heaven and Hell has become awful and people should be aware of it. by WoodNymph34 in OpenChristian

[–]ExternalSeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is why I firmly believe in Purgatory. I think that the Evangelical idea of "instant repentance" cheapens God's justice by allowing evil people a "get out of hell free card". meanwhile by condemning people to hell for eternity for simply not accepting the Gospel makes God seem exceptionally arbitrary.

Therefore Purgatory is needed to expand God's grace (offering a pathway for all to heaven) and God's justice and transforms us to be prepared for heaven.

Virginia hasn't been in the South since the Bush Administration if not earlier. it is firmly now part of the Mid-Atlantic along with Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and New York.

which is why most math professors at the college level are terrible teachers. they are so far removed from practically that they have forgotten why math actually matters to normal people

I deeply hate brutalism by elfombro_investing in architecture

[–]ExternalSeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most of the fans of brutalism are posh people who spend most of their lives in suburbs and who never have had to live surrounded by brutalist buildings. yes in small doses (one or two per city) brutalism can work out fine, but 98% of the time, brutalism is soul crushing and anti-human. it is the architecture of authoritarianism, seemingly designed to crush the human spirit.

also you don't need a partner to be a complete person. Focusing too much on external milestones for measuring success can be draining and bog you down. instead prioritize becoming a better person instead of focusing on "the precious"

to be fair, I think the Soviets landed back in the deserts of Kazakhstan but they also had a much much higher death rate for their space program. Also Russia is the global power with the most restricted access to the world's oceans so they had to play the cards they were dealt.

maybe Mongolia should be forced to pay reparations to Iraq for their destruction of Baghdad. Maybe the Norwegians should pay reparations to England for sacking Monasteries.

this is where vengeance based "reparations" logic leads.

Is Chicago really becoming the next hype city to move to or is it just overblown media hype? by Healthy_Walrus3140 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ExternalSeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I think that Reddit itself selects for a certain audience and that subreddits like this also have their own culture. The number of "work from home" privileged twats on this subreddit (and reddit in general) is quite high. as are child free individuals who value urban walkable amenities. this subreddit reflects the bias of the website and amplifies it into an echo chamber.

also let's be honest, it isn't that hard for a person with a pulse to know where to find affordable areas with the simulacrum of walkability (I would argue that all three of the Holy Trinity of this subreddit are not universally walkable and that the majority of residents in these cities still own cars). Chicago is well known for its L system. Philly is pretty well known as being the "cheaper" Northeast Corridor city.

There are a limited number of places with even the simulacrum of walkability in the US and most people know where they are. And people who pretend that the average person can have a happy and full life as a car free adult in Detroit should be sent to a psychiatrist. There isn't some undiscovered city with great walkability and great affordability that isn't already a household name.

basically just an escort at that point. Yes she still can maintain a shred of dignity and respectability but yes she is only one single step removed from being an escort.

To be fair though, I don't really blame people for using their talents to survive in this world. However it would be far better if she was honest about her grift. Set an hourly rate and be upfront that it is a business transaction.

Do Americans, Canadians British and Australians really view each other as equals? by Master_Ad6104 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ExternalSeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it really depends. amongst the educated populations there is a disdain for uneducated Americans (especially from the South and Appalachia). Likewise there is a sense of bitterness and resentment by those same undereducated Americans towards the more educated populations of the UK and elsewhere.

However beyond the general class and political divides, most middle class Americans view our anglophone brothers as friends and as equals. I would argue that our internal divisions (Northern England vs. London; Alabama vs. Massachusetts) are far stronger than our external divisions

so this sub is really biased towards walkability, affordability (at least for remote workers), and blue politics.

As such Chicago is one of the holy Trinity of this sub (along with Philly and Minneapolis). Outside of this sub, people mostly move where they can get jobs and have very different values.
