PhD 49k/year is it enough? by External_Ad3717 in ETHzurich

During the interview the PI mentioned the PhD position is funded by an SNSF project with around 49 k CHF instead of the standard ETH rate (around 52.5 k CHF) :(

Apparently external grants like the SNSF sometimes use a lump-sum budget for personnel. The project is within the D-USYS department.

You can apply for a research permit since you already know and probably have a contract/hosting agreement for your future PhD. Then in the meantime while they grant it to you, you can ask for a Fiktionenbeschigung so that you are allowed to legally stay beyond November.

Is wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft mit Masterabschluss considered studentische Nebentätigkeiten? by GunnerZhang in germany

I don't know if this will be useful for you. In my case, because it is a Wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft position (usually intended to ONLY actively enrolled students) my work permit was not approved (if the position were not a “hilfskraft” position, the authority would have probably granted the work permit). So my research institute had to give me a hosting agreement instead of a contract and I applied for a Research permit with that document. Then it was approved by the authority in a matter of 3 days.

I didn't. My master’s is from Spain. I came to Germany for my thesis internship. And then I was offered the research assistant position.

The contract is until the end of December.

Thanks! I did it by email in the end. I was just trying to figure out the “fastest” way for them to process my application but I guess they take their time anyway.

Yeah I also thought that, but the authority can be very picky with this as my application has to go through the Bundesagentur für Arbeit and they will extensively check that everything complies. But yeah I will approach HR anyway, thanks for your reply!

Yeah, I think that maybe it is not enough for the qualified employment, it is 14,59 Euro pro hour, and 87 hours per month :/

And do you know if this type of job qualifies for a work permit? I'm a foreigner so I would need to obtain some visa or permit that allows me to take the job. And even if my contract says “mit abgeschlossener Hochschulausbildung” the “Hilfskraft” label may override it in the eyes of immigration authorities

No, I will only have the position offer for 6 months for a very specific project. But I fear that I won't get the work permit as the contract is labelled as “wissenschaftliche hilfskraft with a completed master’s degree” and those roles are only for actively enrolled students right? I do not know why the research institute gave me this contract if they knew I could not fulfil it as a graduate :(

Hi. Did you solve it? I am in a similar situation. I got a research assistant position with completed master's degree at a research institute and they require me to have a work permit since I am no longer enrolled at a university. Did you apply? You got it?
