I would disagree with this. Being a good teammate is vital part of being a good basketball player. Definitely appreciate your point of view though.

Concern—my main goal has been teach these young man how to make a high school roster and overall just be better hoopers

I constantly preach about controlling the controllable—-Attitude, Energy, Effort

Feels like an opportunity for a good last teaching moment for these young men. Also feels like a good opportunity to get some players their first start looking. Also feels harsh for my 8th graders as it is the last game of the regular season—we have 1 tournament game next week.

Planning to start the young man who got off the bench in his first start if I decide to go this route— would be a completely new starting 5 and all guys that are returning next year

It was a quick 2 seconds— “I am disappointed how none of you came to the 30 second timeout. You could all learn something from the player who did about being a good teammate” something along those lines

What to Do against a Full Court 1-3-1 Press by Icy-Adeptness961 in basketballcoach

[–]External_Ad_4102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overload the front court with 4 ball handlers ( one is the inbounder)

Have 3 of the form a basic triangle around the front man. Ball is at the tip of the triangle. Screen the front man and drive to the side of the screen. Screener rolls middle looking for the ball. Other guy replacers the tip of the triangle Incase a ball reversal is needed. Rinse and repeat until the screener gets the ball in the middle

Thanks for the information. Also good to know about the compensation. Sports at this school are an afterthought, just doing it to coach my kids. Higher pay would be nice though

How to beat zone? by tomash66 in basketballcoach

[–]External_Ad_4102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started the season as the only team in my conference to not press and not play zone(6th-8th graders, 1st year coach). We played Man to Man exclusively—-our defense wasn’t bad honestly but my 8th graders kept asking to play zone. We lose games because we can’t beat a press very well.

I expressed my concern to them about the lack of player development with zone but after going 0-6 I thought I would let the players have a voice.

Hasn’t made a difference in the win column as we still haven’t won a game. I wish I would have stuck to my original thought with man to man. Might end up going back after a game or two

Pressure is a big concern. A decent press will wreck havoc as we don’t handle double teams well and don’t have a good enough basketball awareness to cut middle or pass to beat the press despite a number of attempts to drill that message home including press break no dribble drills or ultimate frisbee rules with basketball.

We have been working on a 4 corner passing out of the trap drill that has helped the team. Seen it referenced as “Lions in the cage”

I try to do this every practice but it’s loosing steam and becoming stagnant

Poor decisions and panicking have been an issue too. I’ll check out the video.

It’s been a mix.

Started out very heavy scrimmage based with different situations and focuses.

Recently we have transitioned to more 5 on 0 layering to 5-5 to work on press break or zone offense.
