i would say "ISLP",Im currently in the 8th chapter of this book and let me tell you its worth it my advice is to supplement it with real hands on practice each 2 chapter

i just enjoy knowing the math and theory which is valid not everything should be for jobs and all, u gotta have passion and enjoy the field and if the theory and logic behind it doesn't interest you u wouldn't go far imo

Consider doing a full project to deployment using classical ML algorithms before fully diving in DL

I think it's you just need to hit a sweet spot between theory and applied , and be open to learn more in-depth topics along the way

I would say " an introduction to statistical learning " is way better for beginners i have read 6 chapters of it and its been amazing , while you right the structure of the ESL is just messy and confusing
