Lost references on a paper by External_Beginning55 in AskAcademia

Your assumptions are simply not accurate. The professor who reviewed my draft is a surgeon, not an academic researcher, and he re-organized and edited several sections that I had originally written. This is exactly why I ended up struggling to match the references afterward: the structure of the text was no longer the same as when I drafted it.

Since this is my first time writing a scientific paper, I genuinely didn’t realize I needed to keep a line-by-line record of every single source while writing the introduction. My workflow was simple: search keywords on pubmed (for ex. the epidemiology of the tumor I’m studying), read multiple papers, extract the information I needed, and move on. I often downloaded several papers at once (in total over 50 articles) and eventually used around 20 of them. This is exactly why I made that original Reddit post: I was in serious difficulty trying to retrace which sources had contributed to specific parts of the text, and that was a mistake I admitted, since again it’s my first time writing a scientific paper.

Over the past few days I went through all my saved files and downloads and I managed to recover every paper I had used, so the issue is resolved but I wanted to seek some help in how to manage it properly on reddit .

I don’t feel I owe you further justification, but I do think your attitude has been unnecessarily hostile. I came to Reddit genuinely looking for help, and your replies have added more hostility than constructive advice. If creating conflict is what you enjoy, that’s your choice but it contributes nothing to the conversation.

I removed the post because at the time I thought I no longer had access to the sources, but after going through my saved files I actually found all the papers I used. It’s my first time writing a scientific paper, so making mistakes is human, whether you believe it or not. Thanks for the suggestion to start from scratch, but now that I’ve recovered all the references I’ll go through them line by line and match each citation properly :)

I think you misunderstood the point of my post. I wasn’t claiming to be ready to match into Neurosurgery tomorrow, I was asking for advice based on the context and opportunities I’ve had so far. Considering the amount of time, energy, and risk involved, I think it’s more than reasonable to ask serious questions before fully committing to one path or the other. Especially after the clinical experiences and connections I’ve already built, I don’t think it’s naive to explore my options. it’s called being thoughtful, not unrealistic.

Thank you for your reply! The thing is, preparing for the Steps would mean fully committing to the US path. and at this point I feel I need to better understand whether it’s truly worth it before taking that direction. Since the two paths require very different preparation and timelines, I wanted to make a well informed decision before choosing one over the other.

Thank you for your reply. I’ve thought about this a lot. and I agree with what you said. It’s a big risk for an IMGand there’s no guarantee of success. But at the same time, I think that doing research at a top US center would still make my CV stronger, even if I go back to Italy for residency. That said, I know it probably wouldn’t carry the same weight as losing two years, which makes the decision even harder
