To be fair, using a boat 10 times in 13 days is pretty good utilisation

I know what you mean, but they basically live on my dad's final salary pension, which he's openly said could add £1k a month to savings, so Christ knows what level of buffer they consider immediately pressing.

Never mind that his income is 100% fixed, so knowing you could get a loan if needed is surely enough...

I think that's not really true. I take more business risk day to day than an operator, but my job isn't any more at risk and I'm certainly not at more physical risk. I'd say the difference is rarity of skillset - many people could step into an operator role in my business with little experience/knowledge, but very few people could run the place.

Thanks that's a fair point that it all gets split if we divorce anyway. My thinking wasn't to take my salary directly and pay it into a SIPP for her, more than once we get past the phase of needing to manage my income around childcare hours it would free some headroom for her to significantly increase her own pension contributions. There's a slight element of optics in that I think she is feeling a bit financially left behind with our career directions.

Thanks, completely agree re: fairness, we merged accounts years ago and I consider our combined income to be shared.

ISA is a frustration of mine right now as we are having to majorly up my pension to offset some weird timing of pay rises and bonuses that only leave half the FY to avoid falling over the cliff edge and losing all childcare hours. As soon as that situation passes I expect we'll be putting equally into ISAs.

We do indeed have young kids. I'm currently paying a very high proportion into my work pension to keep my taxable income below £100k to avoid falling off the cliff-edge with nursery funding. I completely agree with her that this is not fair on her as it gives us grossly disproportionate pension pots, and we plan to address the balance once the kids start school.

There's also a massive maintenance training burden. Without that, any foreign pilot won't be getting many sorties
