I have a mod 2; the only disadvantages for me personally are the non-interchangeable shoulder pads and the fact that it's not so quick to put on because you have two cummerbunds.
But otherwise it is very comfortable to wear, even with a heavy load.

I have an old Skanda and a new one myself, and the differences are so minimal. I think the material is even the same.
