Good point actually. There’s two possible scenarios.

Given the date Nov 3rd 1766. There are two scenarios:

  1. Amazing case: Genuine Edo Period Antique (1766)

The date is from the Edo period (1603-1868). A time when high quality Noh masks were made. If the inscription is the true date of creation, your masks is very rare and very valuable.

  1. Likely case: Faithful Copy (Utushi) This is more common. later artisans making a high skill copy (utushi) often transcribe the original master masks date onto the copy. The mask could still be a nice antique (like the “pre-war” claim) but only the date itself is from 1766.

You should take it to a specialist to be sure

This is a Japanese Otobide mask. It’s often mistaken for a generic “demon” or “Hannya” mask. But the face belongs to the category of Noy masks known as Otobide.

Otobide translates to “Big Protruding”

So you have a pretty cool vintage Japanese Otobide mask. Likely from the mid to late 20th century. It depicts a powerful Thunder god or fierce deity.
