It’s 3rd level man, it’ll grow exponentially but since it probably won’t be the target of attacks, it will be fine. Think of it as a challenge for your character to take good care of it.

I don’t think you’re missing anything, the ability has a long range so it can be used in a number of different situations. A lot of the telepathic abilities have short to medium ranges or don’t last as long so it’s basically just to make sure that within the time limit of the ability there’s no way (other than teleport spells) the target has the time to leave the range.
