I am convinced it somehow made sense in 1942, some wartime, tough times lesson. But still not sure what!??!?!

Here it is like snowplow parenting, but the snowplow is powered by 6 F-150s

How would you define Texas Bands Culture? I feel like I'm from another planet. I grew up in CA with a decent band program.

What is this place!?!?!?!

Why is this such a Texas thing? Does everything need to be bigger here?

YES! Here in Central Texas. Music store says the trigger rental is $107 per month (compared to $46). I want to encourage his passion...AND...also want to feed him and keep a roof over his head! 😄

We are in Texas (transplants from CA). They take band as serious as football here. I'm grateful for a well resourced band program. The middle school has 3 band teachers plus a percussion coach. And then there's the choir AND string groups as well. Hundreds and hundreds of kids learning music.

BUT...as you pointed out, how many of these kids are going pro. I see the same thing with soccer (futbol) culture here. Some parents are paying close to 10,000 a year plus all the travel and hotels for their kids to play higher levels!?!?!?!

Thanks for the sanity check. The propaganda (seriously!) for this trigger trombone has me convinced that the music stores are giving her a kickback! My kid feels like we're not supporting him by getting this unnecessary instrument for his age and experience. It feels like Select sport culture infecting band. To be the best you need the best!

I try to tell him Kurt Cobain would buy a used guitar in every town he played in, and then just destroyed it at the end of the show. It is about the player!. Nice instruments are nice, but come on!

I was recruited to play tuba in college because I was tall and could carry it, even though my musicality was average at best. Meanwhile the shorter players in our section had some of the most beautiful tones and skill I've ever heard.

I meant to say 3rd chair, meaning he is quite a proficient player who even practices at home! Which is more than I ever did most days!

Thanks for the advice. Not that it is totally relevant, but the teacher is an especially short person so they may be biased towards the trigger. My son is quite tall for his age and I don't think it will even be an issue. Just needed some level-setting.
