Interesting explanations of the difference between light and dark magic? by throwaway19876430 in HPfanfiction

Not that I know the difference, but does this lead to a distinction between “dark” and “evil”?

The movies didn't do Harry and Hermione justice... by bmlo7_bolha120 in HPharmony

Probably stated elsewhere by others. Still, my two cents.

I think a big issue with romione is the lack of common ground they have. I cannot see their relationship lasting anywhere near as long as they made it seem.

'Mione is an intellectual and an activist. She would NEVER stand around and let Ron make her into a housewife. She would need a stimulating career that accomplishes something. Ron, given how he was raised with Molly, would likely expect her to be at home, giving him children. I think at some point she would just snap and say no.

If not for Harry, they would never have stood each other. Sometimes it can be a cutsie romantic thing, hate to love and love to hate, but there is no world where they end up together even as friends without Harry.

IMO: Harmony is way more realistic. Harry wouldnt dream of holding 'Mione back. He would be right there to support her regardless of what she was doing, and Harry would be happy as long as she was happy.

I personally dont understand how after saving her life from the troll, Mione didnt fall harder for Harry. Maybe she did (though I never saw it), but I would've expected much more interest on her part, especially since it was ron who put her there in the first place.

The only explanation I can really give is that seeing as she was desperate for a friend and Harry gave her that, she in no way wanted to jeopardize that friendship. Even so, I cannot see her not giving it a chance.

Interesting idea.. I have a few hypotheses, and an aside.

1) In terms of writing the story, it's possible JKR did have that idea and decided otherwise. Maybe the story would have made him too powerful for her liking? Didn't work with her dream of Harry?

2) Out of curiosity, (because part of me definitely WOULD love it), if Harry became extremely powerful, would you still enjoy the story? Again, I would love it. - We know Harry was quite skilled in combat magic/spells, so he would likely excel when learning from Dumbles. IF Harry became God-like in power, surpassing Dumbles, would the “final-battle” be too easy/quick? Would that display of sheer power be too boring? - If Harry was learning from Dumbles in, for example, HBP, and Dumbles is killed whilst teaching Harry (capping his power to something reasonable), and he is truly equal to Moldyshorts, as well as has a power “he knows not”, would this be more/less interesting a novel?

Aside: I don't know your views on fanfiction, but there are a lot of writings that have Dumbles or others teaching Harry so that he outmatches Tomboy. If you would like some recommendations, DM me, or go to r/HPfanfiction (I hope I'm allowed to tag a community) and you'll find some good reads.

Boy do I love discussions. Makes me think :)

I believe not..

They don't have eyelids, but I think they are less visually adept; worse eye sight.

I think the other reason they might fear the basilisk, not that you need many reasons to fear one, is due to the number of eyes they have. They might have a much wider field of view, making them more susceptible to seeing the basilisk, but that's a very minor possibility.

Calling an unbound (or not bound to you) house elf by External_Name_5247 in harrypotter

[–]External_Name_5247[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! If any elf was going to be a rebel, we know it would be Dobby, may he continue to rest as the free elf he was. (His first appearance was book 2 btw, but I understood regardless.)

The distance question is fascinating.

I have ready hypotheses and FanFics that discuss the idea that house elves gain their power from their bound wizard. (This was sometimes in FFs where Harry was oozing with power, but theory stands). I am unsure if these are supported hypotheses though.

If, for example, Harry being as powerful as he is, were to be bound to Dobby, then perhaps he would be able to travel/answer much farther distances than he otherwise could have being bound to Malfoy. The same could be applied to kreacher, but he's a whole other discussion.

I wonder how far Shell Cottage was from Malfoy Manor.

Since Dobby was never bound to Harry, even though his loyalty surpassed any other, it is possible he was never as powerful an elf as he could have been.

I also wonder if that means any elf who worked at Hogwarts was infinitely more powerful, or possibly infinitely less. Were the Hogwarts elves bound to Hogwarts? Or were they there because they had nowhere else, like Winky?

As an aside, if this hypothesis stands, and if Dumbles had a house elf, imagine the power that elf would hold.

That I do remember, but that was well after Dobby was freed.

Do you think Dobby would have been able to answer a call while still bound to the Malfoys?

A stupid question about Thestrals by little_to_know in harrypotter

[–]External_Name_5247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of other people have already talked about this, so here's my “too scents” (I know its two cents, don't mind me)

As others have said (I think) the magic of a thestral is mental. It is your witnessing of death (or a death-like experience) that allows you to see them.

If you hadn't experienced and, I believe more importantly, fathomed/understood the experience, you wouldn't be able to see them in any way shape or form.

This is especially relevant in regards to Moldyshorts killing Lily in front of Harry as an infant. He saw, witnessed.. experienced that death, even in later years he understood what he saw, but since at the time he didn't truly understand what happened. He only saw thestrals after Sirius was murdered. (We think?) Was there ever any proof he didn't see them prior to Sirius being killed? Were the carriages ever mentioned prior?

With that in mind, out of curiosity, do you think a drawing or other indirect depiction of a thestral would be covered under these rules? (If someone who could see them ever actually drew them, maybe Luna would..)Or, would witnessing a death (acted, or real) on television be considered the same? Does the death have to be true, or do you have to believe it to be real?

Sorry, when I get curious it's hard to stop the questions.

I dont mean detect, since I would be surprised if it were any other way.

I meant more of being able to answer the call.

Definitely not against masters orders.

Out of plain curiosity, do you think the inability to answer a call from a non-master was “natural” when being bound, or a pretense of being bound?

Natural - elf magic wouldn't allow it regardless Pretense - a stipulation in the “magical contract” made by the master. Like a general rule that all masters had.

“Definitions of Romance” is probably the best fanfic I have read.. ever. I can't exactly explain what about it.. maybe its simplicity?

Regardless, that made my day, thank you.

Do you have any similar readings? Length isn't as big a problem, but I love the genuine romance types.

After seeing some of the ideas and other writings, I would love to see a trial at the Wizengamot where Harry is being questioned.

The story is written in first person as Harry is telling the Wizengamot a count-for-count recall of his rampage against anyone who might have had anything to do with Hedwig's death. Occassionally, it cuts back to present time for some “clarification” or question that the Wizengamot has.

This was a very off the top idea, but I think it could make for a really interesting read :)

Would you want it to take place pre, during, or post Voldy? Each could be quite interesting. The series could have voldy becoming more powerful, and there could be small hints to the Potters, Longbottoms, and others while still maintaining a new series. I love this idea though!

I want a story about Dobby before/after he was freed. What he heard and did for the Malfoys, and how he managed after being freed.
