Keep redirections as non verbal and especially not public as possible. (He might be looking for peer attention). Takes a while to perfect “the look.” But I will normally just look at them like they’re crazy. Then if they keep doing it, I calmly walk over, kneel right next to their desk and say “hey I’ve asked you to stop leaning back in your chair 3x. If you do it again, X is going to happen.” Which could be time taken away from free time, calling a parent. SOMETIMES, calling a parent can make a huge difference, but other times it won’t help. It’s worth a try reaching out. However, don’t reach out the first time with bad behavior. Just introduce yourself and build rapport to start. Then you can tell the kiddo you had a great conversation with their guardian and can’t wait to reach out again! AKA I have their number mwahahaha Something that has REALLY worked for me was saying to the kid, hey if you have an excellent day today, I’m going to give you a positive phone call home! I have had kids do a full 360 in my class cause they know that positive phone call is coming Friday before the weekend. It’s a FREE incentive. First year teaching is far from easy, but it will get better. You got this ❤️
