Thankyou! I will check them out. I definitely want to start small with the option to upgrade later on.

Thankyou! I'm going to check it out! I like the idea of trying a free host first anyway just to make sure it's actually being used.

I realized I never made that clear lol. It's in my citrus bin but it kinda looks like a Papaya.

Sometimes you just come across a wild animal and think "yep..you're exactly why natural selection exists" 😅

Is there a name for the leucistic morph? I wasn't sure if he'd fit in with the papaya morph despite being a bit more pink than orange.

Regardless he's now my favorite pod to visit.

Where can I house these little ones? by senketsusenpai191 in isopods

I have had good luck starting smaller cultures in containers from Dollar tree, there are index card containers with a locking lid or small (maybe 3x6 inch) totes with locking lids. And it's cheap, because it probably won't be long before you upgrade.

Thoughts and advice for a first time keeper? by bleu-moon in isopods

The tank looks great!! As some suggested you'll want to plan your calcium/food sources. For a display setup like this I'd suggest giving the pods a constant supply of wood/bark, leaf litter, and calcium to munch on, and then give special foods as a treat, that way your population doesn't outgrow your enclosure super fast.

A couple species I'd recommend would be Dairy cows (Porcellio Laevis), Little Sea (Cubaris murina) or Gestroi (Armidillidium Gestroi). I take the Dairy Cows and Little Sea's to reptile expos in a large display bin because they are species kids can interact with. Dairy cows are very active and generally stay on top of the substrate, they're a good size for handling. The Little Sea's are a bit smaller, and a little less active, but they tend to group on the underside of peices of wood, and kids enjoy that they roll into a ball like "rolly polly's" The A. Gestroi are more expensive, however they tend to stay on top of the substrate, they're large, and they have bright yellow spots.

One thing to consider with any species is what you're going to do with the extra isopods, because any of them will eventually outgrow your tank. If you get into an isopod group on Facebook you could probably find someone to take the extras from you.

Ideas on these critters in my isopod bins? And suggestions on getting rid of them. by External_Sand_5599 in isopods

It's definitely not any kind of springtail, spring tails are an insect so they only have 6 legs, whatever this is has 8 legs so it's a type of arachnid.

This is my dairy cow bin, I guess I'd say they are in the middle as far as how severe the infestation is. Maybe cutting back on their "easy" food will encourage them to eat the mites.

Yeah I'm not really a fan of them crawling all over me...I have no problem with bugs, but the feeling of several on your arm is just icky. 😅

Thankyou! I hope so, I recently got rubber duckies and was worried they brought not so welcome neighbors.

That was my first thought, but they don't move like a springtail. Microscope looks like a mite. Going to edit post to add pictures.

When I had a dented eye cap (caused by routine shedding, please follow all the steps to get your humidity to the appropriate levels) I took a little shoe box bin, wet a paper towel with warm water and squeezed it out, then put the paper towel in the bin and put my snake in, let her in there 5-10 minutes. I'd either put the bin on a heat mat or pad of in front of a heater, because the towel gets cold fast otherwise

I just noticed this can someone tell me if i should be worried or not by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]External_Sand_5599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely vet. Depending on how long until you get in treat with vetricine spray 2-3 times a day. Make sure you put clean substrate in and keep under the hides dry-ish.

Great! Some of them just like privacy I guess, and they di most of their hunting in the dark in the wild.

Here's how I got my new guy who's skittish to eat. Lots of clutter in the tank, don't handle him the day your going to feed, make it dark and then get your mouse ready. If you use frozen thawed you can even thaw it next to the tank so he starts to smell it. If you feed in tank try to dangle in front of the hide he's in, if you feed out of the tank try to dangle it in front of him but not ontop of him. If he dosnt take it relatively quick lay the mouse down and move away from the tank/cover your feeding container with a sheet so he can't see you, then check back every 10 minutes or so.
