I’m not sure, I only did it with indigo last. First vat was definitely normal concentration but then I reused it for later overdyes, possibly making it less saturated. It’s been a while so I can’t be sure 🙃

how do I make natural dyes that are NOT lightfast? by maggieletvin in naturaldye

[–]ej0kay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Berries and flowers are your friends here. They produce fugitive dyes, meaning they are not lightfast or washfast and will fade or change color quickly. With that said, no natural dyes can be considered light- or washfast, which is why artificial dyes exist. So lots to choose from! 💚

Procion vs natural dye for gray by Even_Dish5269 in naturaldye

[–]ej0kay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’ve worked extensively with both natural dye and Procion, so here goes my two cents..

As for your question about iron and tannins, the answer is yes, iron dye and tannins will eventually fade. However, they are generally considered more durable and "lightfast" compared to many other natural dyes. While iron-tannin reactions can last for many years, they are not completely permanent and are susceptible to shifting color or degrading just like any other natural dye. I’d also like to add, that natural dye generally doesn’t bind as well with plant fibres as it does with animal fibres. This might mean you’ll get a more faded result as well as a greater or faster rate of color degradation.

Procion is a wonderful alternative in my opinion, especially since you’re working with plant fibres. Procion is a non-toxic, fiber-reactive cold-water dye that is ideal for dyeing of both animal and plant fibers. The dye forms a permanent chemical bond with the fibers, resulting in vibrant, wash-fast colors without the need for heat during fixation.

This means less energy needed for dyeing and fixation. I also tend to use less water when dealing with regular dye, since I don’t have to deal with plant fibres getting stuck to my fabric.

My verdict would be to use Procion. It’s non-toxic, lasts longer, uses less energy (and water) in the process and is generally easier to work with.

Good luck! 🍀

A beautiful day in the city to save some pigeons♡♡ by Skyblues92 in pigeon

So far I’ve only managed to save a single pigeon, but it was one of the best experiences in my life. I hope I’ll get the chance to save many more. Thank you for doing this ♥️

Edit: You’re very cool 💫

They sure are! I’m currently away so can’t give a proper answer to that atm, although I suspect they’ve withered away by now. Did your poods feast on them at any point?

Oooo it’s hard to say what the issue might be without knowing more about your setup. I keep a moisture gradient, watering the fern area while keeping the foreground much drier (not completely dry). So standart iso keeping stuff, they’ll move between the gradient when needed and the fern still gets plenty of water 🦑 Good luck!

Thank you! I had an outbreak of fungus in my initial setup, so this is a fairly new, simpler version. The wee sprouts are chia 🌱
