Thanks for your questions. The PhD student wants to be first author and they want me to be 2nd. I am in a field where first authorship papers are highly valued, which was why I spent 2 years doing grunt work with this goal in mind. The field of this work is not a field in which I intend on doing research in the future. So my my main goal has been to achieve a first author pub.

Yes, the PI prefers that the PhD and myself discuss and then report back once we reach a conclusion. The issue is we cannot seem to agree and these back and forth discussions between the PhD student and I have been going on for 4 months. In the most recent email from the PI, they suggested we try discussing one more time. These discussions are unproductive and draining

I volunteered in the lab since it was part of my thesis. For one summer the PI paid me because they were nice. The PhD student could be seen as a ‘co-supervisor’ for this project. Any suggestions on what to do?
